“A confession?” she asked, only just realizing she had walked into a church. Perhaps she should have payed more attention to what building she had ducked into when avoiding the one night stand from last week. “Oh. . . I’m. . . not exactly the religious type.”

Remembering the Votive

Another week had passed, thankfully without her being in the medical ward, but it was Sunday. The sun had barely breached the horizon and Natasha was up and getting ready to go out.

She took the subway to a small Catholic church  that was far enough from the tower that she would go unnoticed. Upon entering she located the small display of candles and deposited a few paper bills before lighting a candle. Natasha wouldn’t call this a ritual, she doesn’t like to have actions that were repeated and stood out, but she does light a candle sometime every week and promptly leaves.

This week was to be no different until a man in robes bumped into her as she was leaving. “Excuse me.”

Being on the road meant hotels, hotels meant bars. That was all she needed to remember tonight. The constant thought of the drink she was going to need after watching the more disturbing affair of her newest case was a welcome thought. Her heels clicked along the tile floor as she found herself in a church rather then a seedy motel. Apparently the adulterer felt like repenting for the sin he’d just committed. Hypocrisy at it’s best, wait till he got to pay for his little trist. While she waited for him to confess his sin and feelings to a faceless voice she sat in a pew and looked around. It’d been so long since she’d been in one that it felt foreign.

“Hey, Father.” The woman’s face lit up with a smile, and, with an ear-tearing screech, she slowed down the old, worn-looking car to roll smoothly by the man. “Need a ride?”
