Agility Trumps Ability
Agility Trumps Ability:
Simon Sinek says we should always start with WHY. If you haven’t read his book, here is a link to one of the best business books I’ve ever read.
But as soon as you get past the WHY, you’ll need to also define the WHAT, HOW, WHEN, WHO, and WHERE.
Focus on the HOW for a minute. Do you have just one HOW?
I used to think success came from how much one knew about HOW to perform their chosen profession. But as I reflect on the past 30 years in which we’ve seen some of the most innovative, disruptive, and fast-moving times, I’ve come to realize that success is much more dependent on one’s agility, not ability.
I have no argument with the benefits of getting as much education as you can afford, and building expertise in your profession as possible, but too narrow of a focus on the HOW can actually hold you back. Over focus on HOW can in fact make you LESS valuable in the marketplace.
Doesn’t it make sense that we cannot be the most valuable advisor if we force clients to work the way WE work, using the tools WE specify, and using OUR old-world methodologies just because we only know those processes, tools, and methodologies?
It’s human nature to resist change, but if you really want to be the most valuable advisor, focus a bit more on your agility with new technologies.
At The Sleeter Group, we do everything we can to help you as you pursue new knowledge, new methods, new technologies, and increasingly new business models. I hope you’ll join us at #Solutions14 www.sleeterconference.com to discover new business models, new HOWs, and new technologies that will keep you ahead of the curve, and position yourself as an agile professional. See you there!
