I come from Missouri but without the dusty streets of Denton Texas I wouldn’t be who I am. When I stepped out of the car last week on the town square, under the pecan trees who's branches are still bare from the waning winter, I turned my face to the sun and felt home again. For several months I had been chatting with Doug Burr about doing some promotional shots. After a lot of schedule shifting and missed connections we finally had an opportunity to work together as I made my way from Seattle to Austin for SXSW. I fell in love with his music with “O Ye Devastator” (2010) and love hearing the grittier tones rising from the darkness with his new release “Pale White Dove”. I met him at his rehearsal space in an Oak Grove just south of Denton. The trees were all still naked with their witchy branches, mangled and arthritic, rising high above us. I saw him as an extension of that forest, coming not from out of the darkness, but from the light.
