NYAN NYAN PARASOL (2000)
Doujin soft action game featuring developer / artist Shisui House's mascot character Mei-nyan.
a retrospective on cave story i wrote for the 20th anniversary of its english translation in 2005*, putting it in context as part of the transition from the post-shareware limbo phase of independent game production to the indie boom.
Cave Story brought all of this development with it when it arrived on the shores of the players who would become indies. Its emphasis on depth over breadth in design can be considered a tendency of the doujin sphere as a whole, down to the handcoded sprinkler effect seen in just two areas of the game. There are essentially two ways a program can be impressive. It can either be a very large system with lots of moving parts that nonetheless hold together well, or it can be a very small, very subtle thing with a million different facets that become apparent only after you've seen it from as many different angles. Doujin gamemakers of the '80s and '90s, without the resources to make the first, tended toward the second, and by the time Cave Story had come out, they had become very good at it.
*this is a lie. it had actually been meant for the 20th anniversary of the cave story itself last year, but the scope of the project expanded. better late than never. this is actually me fitting the theme, if you think about it.
The tiers of Touhou Dojin games, by characters included, are:
Straight up just EoSD again, maybe a dev's other pet fav for whatever reason
A wide smattering of characters from across the mainline games
There is a character who showed up as a supporting role in one volume of a manga in there
? OCs have been added but they're written in seamlessly enough that you may doubt if they aren't real.
beta MIRROR footage
This 1992 doujin game is something else. Run away from a massive man trying to punch you to bits
It's called Oshioki Kirai 2 and it's on PC-98
Apparently in later levels he attacks you with chopsticks, napkins and other household items
I'll, uh, share footage if I ever get past the first level

Comiket Day 3, in which I got there early enough to be covered in other peoples sweat.
Herp, accidentally hit publish before I typed anything.
Well anyways, I got to the ThunderDome just after 10 or 11, and so there was no line just a slow moving mosh-pit. I went to the west-hall, which was a good Idea and I'll tell you why in a second, because I wanted to by me some indie games. Doujin-soft (as in software) is the word, so I imagine there are some things other than games.
But I wanted games, and I got games (the most expensive ones were 1,000 yen, that's about 10$!)
Game list: ACE OF SEAFOOD - this fucking game. It sounds like a joke when I talk about it, but imagine any of the sort of ace-pilot games, but with fish instead. 100 yen. It might be the best game per price here, or overall.
Ninja Rising, prototype ver. - Girl strider demo pretty much. 100 yen. Looks sweet!
Sky Lens - trial ver 1.1 Another side scrolling action game. Looks promising. I hope it controls like Devil May Cry (1,3,4 that is.) 300 yen.
Soul Saber 2 - It was at a previous Comiket, when I looked up things to expect in the Doujin-soft department. It's some sort of run + gun 3d action game, with what looks like special costumes and clothing damage. Oh, and boobs. 1000 yen, but also it is a full game. And sequel? I looked up the first game, and apparently its a broken as shit 3D fighter with okay 3D.
Last is by that was kinda impulse, Fault Milestone One, because it looks like fantasy mideval Higurashi in the preview video I saw. 1000 yen for the steam key, The CD was more expensive only slightly, but I don't remember how much.
Anyway, the east halls were sweaty people filled hell. It was also hentai day, so I was a little awkward wading through men to find out I was in the wrong half of the east hall, and to run to other side to get what I was looking for. A tame PSO2 comic that was just there on a weird day!
After that I elected to abandon the rest of the things on my list, visited cosplayers, and curled up behind a pillar with some 'drinking icecream.'
So it was searing hot, and everything I wished for. Aside from other's sweat on me, but a towel helped. And I didn't die! I also didn't buy any touhou based games, because I'm not a good shmup player. There was also the slapping game, Carnelian, but I didn't want it. Don't get me wrong, though, great game with great art. My brother got it and it came with an art piece and thanks card, and some other stuff.
What is it with doujin games and their inability to support screen resolutions higher than 640x480? It's not 1998 anymore.
