DAY 4: DOUMEN

Juiciest lychee in the world grows right here in Doumen. David set the lowest expectations for himself before his rooting. He contemplated there being no house and no family, that he would perhaps just get to observe the town his family allegedly hails from. In a wonderful twist, he was met by new family members, an incredible house to explore, and a familial lychee garden. 

David’s generous family gave us bags of this! So fleshy. The size of ping pong balls. Even almost cured us from the heat. Almost. (David’s ancestors decided to not make it rain today).

DAY 4: DAVID’S MATERNAL GRANDFATHER’S VILLAGE

DOUMEN: JULY 9TH, 2017 // WORDS FROM DAVID

Because of roots I was able to meet two of my Ai Yis in the village where my maternal grandfather was born where my maternal grandmother lived for 20 years. It was a completely unexpected situation when I rolled up to the village. Before I knew what was happening, I was being led by the hands to light incense and burn money for the ancestors. They led me to their garden which was filled with lychee trees, and the entire group dove into the succulent fruits with gusto. The lychee were the sweetest and juiciest I'd ever tasted in my life. The memory of meeting long lost family and sharing fruit with them will last me a lifetime.
