It was the first night back and the three Head Mistresses had just wrapped up their rather long and really odd speech. It was supposed to be warm and welcoming, he thought, but somehow everything they had to say all tied into meeting a grisly end. Trespassing into the Forbidden Forest? Possible death by Acromantula. Checking out the restricted section? Possible death by papercuts. Setting off a dung bomb? Death. Eating the sweets on Madame Dorothy’s desk without permission? Also death.
Needless to say, Abel wasn’t left feeling tingly or fuzzy or all that welcomed from their greeting. He shook his head, chalking it all up to their batty charm, and turned to the table just as endless food sprung from their silver platters. It was hard to concentrate too long on such a dismal speech when mountains upon mountains of tasty food was thrust right under your nose. Abel’s stomach growled eagerly and he immediately started shoveling the roast duck onto his plate.
Going back to Hogwarts was always a stressful time for him. While he loved his education, his teachers, and all his friends, he was easily overwhelmed and stressed. So, while the first night may have been greeting all of his housemates, his Quidditch team members, and all his beloved friends, the dread of starting classes still loomed over him.
...This tower of mashed potatoes loomed over him, too, and he reached to take a rather large helping before clanking his spoon against another’s. “...Oh,” He paused, drawing back, “Sorry. I saw potatoes and everything went blank. Forgot my manners.”
