Angelo Ippolito, “Seascape in Blue.” Ippolito was a member of the Downtown art scene in the 50s and a founder of the influential Tanager Gallery along with Fred Mitchell. . His work was known for its “joyous color” (Fairfield Porter) and “joyous lyricism” (Dore Ashton). Jean Michel Basquiat ‘Still Kicking’ in the gloom of a London winter at twilight’ last gleamings. One of the best artifsct I’ve ever possessed, sometimes an object possesses the owner so I put it on the front cover of my latest, rather good, catalogue of material from Julio Mario Santo Domingo’s LSD Library. The photo was taken by William Coupon, a great US portrait photographer, and is a monochrome Polaroid substantially altered by the sitter who has scratched and rumpled it, in a Baconian fashion. It came from Basquiat’s last love Kelle Inman into the trade.
