SYNDROME. Why? Becasue we love you.
Trailer for the new documentary "Deaf President Now!," available now on Apple+
If (like most people) you're not familiar with the phrase "Deaf President Now"--it was the slogan of a 1988 protest at Gallaudet University where Deaf students demanded their right to be governed by people who were like them, who understood their culture and way of life--in other words, demanded that their university finally appoint for itself a Deaf president over a hearing one (again) and to make their Board majority Deaf. Their success after a week of protests, shutting the school down and making themselves heard in mainstream news, signaled a MASSIVE breakthrough in disability justice and autonomy, and helped to pave the way for the passing of the ADA 2 years later. For the Deaf community specifically, in the U.S. but even rippling worldwide, it stands as one of the most notable moments in Deaf history, signifying a cultural shift towards Deaf Pride and Deaf Power.
Disclaimer: I am hearing, not Deaf, I am just taking ASL classes and this description is based on what I've learned in classes, readings, and having just watched this documentary tonight!
It was very good, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in protests for civil rights, disability justice, or minority empowerment! Or people who just enjoy documentaries, as this was very well-made!
a little birthday knitting in the hotel room, any guesses as to what it’ll be when finished?
Bea's knitting corner
Currently working on my second petal drop sock by 'handmade by florence'. The lace looks so lovely, while being surprisingly easy to knot, that I'm planning to make fingerless gloves in the same lace pattern in the future.
I have a month long break between exams and I'm so excited to finish these socks!
