All it took was one mission to go wrong. One wrong misstep, a missed bullet, a faulty glyph.

But that's all it takes, doesn't it? One wrong move.

The experiments they'd been through were relentless. Less than a few hours kidnapped and they could hear each other's screams through the padded walls, could feel each other's pain and hurt as their very DNA was tampered with. Dust, the very thing they'd been trained to weaponize, fused and bonded to bones and muscle, absorbed to become one with their aura. Test after test, injection after injection. It was the equivalent to hell on Earth. Nobody was coming for them.

'Dust Beasts' Roman had called them. Oh, they'd show him what a beast could do.

They escaped in the destruction, testing and releasing their newfound powers in rage. They all saw blood, felt the pure energy flowing through them as they wielded abilities akin to magic. Nobody stood a chance, and it wasn't until the building fell into shambles and rubble that they'd realised what they became.

Monsters.

Summary:

After an attack led by Roman Torchwick and the White Fang interrupts Weiss and Ruby's date, Weiss is left with scars that will impact her for the rest of her life. Team RWBY tries to help their traumatised teammate recover, but things turn out to be a lot more difficult than they first assumed.

Meanwhile, Ruby tries to fix the broken bond between her and her partner before it's too late.

Did I really make two separate post about explaining the same AU idea, with completely different levels of details because it hunted me so much and I had forgotten about the original? Apparently, yes. Guess I really should get around to doing something with the Dain and Faith are real AU.
