“I’ll bring you back a rock from the moon.”

Senku doesn’t look away from the sky, from the moon that shines high above the city. His feet scuff the ground beneath the swing, and he scrapes more ice cream onto the little wooden spoon. It tastes like vanilla and a tongue suppressor, it feels like summer. The warm gentle breeze ruffles his hair, stray strands tickle the shell of his ear and the back of his neck. He holds the wooden spoon– does it count as a spoon, it’s more like a popsicle stick– between his teeth.

Hiss. Pop.

She laughs, and then there’s a soft grunt and a muffled ow as she knocks the neck of her cola bottle against her teeth. Her feet are firmly planted on the ground because she’s taller than him, which isn’t hard because he’s the first to admit he’s tiny. The swing creeks as she sways it back and forth, arms looped around the chains.

“I can’t wait.”

“It’ll be your graduation present.”

“Oh?”

“Ya.” And then he turns, and she’s watching him. She probably has been this whole time with eyes full of love because that’s the only feeling she seems to know. That’s her, full of love for her old man, her baby brother, the stray cat that lives on their street and the super worn out pencil in her pencil case. “I’ll make it to the moon before you graduate university.”

The bubbles in the cola rise through the amber tinted liquid, settling near the surface. It’s not his to drink, so it sits out, going flat like every dinner. He can’t waste food, but he can let a cola go flat, so he eats his crappy fox millet ramen dinner across from a fizzing cola.

Senku clinks his bowl against the glass and down the broth in one breath.

“Where are you?”

“Has-”

“Your keys are right here, relax, old man,” she sighed, holding out the jingling chain.

Byakuya let out a long sigh, holding his hand out for his daughter to drop the keys into his palm. He tossed them up into the air to readjust his grip and smoothed his thumb over the house key. It’s long been dulled and beaten by time. Then he closes his hand to roll the little keychain attachment, a moon, a rocket and two stars.

The rocket was a new addition, gifted when he was accepted into the astronaut program. The second star– engraved with an S– came before that when he brought Senku home, and before that an unmarked star and moon pair. Neither engraved because there was never a doubt about who it was for.

He looked up at his eldest, standing on the floor in her slippers. She’d let herself fall against the wall, arms crossed while she watched him work himself up on his way out the door. What if he forgot something? He’d gone through his bag twice, once last night and once this morning checking off the list she’d left on his dresser when he’d started packing. Then, after lunch, things had been folded a bit differently and a letter was tucked in with them.

“I have to ask, what’s in the letter?”

She scoffed. “You haven’t opened it yet? Good.”

“Oh come on-”

“Hey, old man! Get a move on or you’ll miss your flight,” Senku called from the bottom of the steps.

“Argh, right!” He turned around, reached for the door and then paused. “Hey-”

“Go!”

“Senku?”

Senku looks back over his shoulder to find the newly recovered priestess of Ishigami village. She was carefully holding back the “door” to the lab and only sticking her head in far enough to see if he was there. Ever respectful and polite, not wanting to encroach on his space.

The sunset lights her back with a golden halo and obscures her in shadows.

“Huh? Oh, Ruri. To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“The village children are gathering for a story before bed, I thought I’d invite you.”

“Is it one of the hundred tales?”

He waves her in and turns back to his work, missing the way Ruri smiled as she stepped inside.

“Actually, no, but I think you’ll find it interesting all the same.”

And she’s been right so far, so he follows her.

Across the wooden bridge that’s missing a plank and into the village built on the blood, sweat, and tears of his father and the other astronauts. Under the stars that gave humanity hope and him a headstart in this journey to revive all of humanity, they joined the other villagers around a small fire.

He sat next to Kohaku who held Suika in her lap, and Chrome moved to his other side. Ginro had snuck up the bridge and was hanging out at the end while Kinro kept guard at the other end. Ruri sat next to her sister, and he could see Kaseki through the flames with some of the other elders.

Turquoise stood, and everyone fell silent.

“I hope you kids don’t mind, but I’m going to tell tonight’s story.”

There was small laughter and children assuring her it was fine.

“I love this story,” Suika whispered, looking to Senku.

“I-I’m,” Senku wheezed before breaking out into another coughing fit.

“Of course,” she conceded sarcastically, wringing out the cloth in her hands.

She folded it up and placed it on the boy’s forehead, and then set her hand on his chest– feeling it heave beneath her palm. Trying not to weigh his already strained lungs down, she began to rub circles to try and soothe him.

It was the middle of the night and Byakuya was away for some teaching thing. She’d called and left him a message, but she’d also told him not to worry. She had this covered, he was only supposed to be gone for another day anyways.

Senku looked up at her with glassy eyes, his mouth hanging slightly open to breath, and his hair soaked in sweat. He looked down right miserable. She pushed a stray strand of hair from his face and flipped the cloth over.

“But even if you’re fine, it’s time to sleep.” Senku pouted. “Here, I’ll tell you a story. It’s about the moon and two special little stars…”

Even knowing where his school was, it meant nothing. Had she been home? Had she gone to the store, or a cafe? Maybe her laptop had died and she’d rushed to find somewhere to get it fixed, or a friend had called her up for lunch. There were too many possibilities. Too many places she could have been and even more places she could have ended up.

Senku stands before the rubble of the miracle cave with his hands on his hips.

“Hey, Senku,” Ukyo calls out, approaching from the former kingdom of might.

“Ya, what’s up?”

“Now that things have settled down, I thought you might like to know that Tsukasa found another statue near that big tree where you found Yuzuriha.”

“So? There’s a hundred statues all around, what’s so special about this one?”

Ukyo shrugged. “Not sure, but Taiju’s been-”

Senku Ishigami is not an overly reactive person, but before Ukyo could finish his sentence he’d grabbed the man by the shoulders.

“Where is she?”

“Do you recognize her?”

Yuzuriha gasped softly, hand covering her mouth, and Taiju reacted much the same. It was instinct, and it was dangerous.

“A friend of yours?” Tsukasa pressed.

He wasn’t prepared to trust them blindly, after all they could easily trick him into reviving someone like Senku and he didn’t want to kill someone else. However, if he could revive someone as talented in handicrafts as Yuzuriha or even someone else as strong as Taiju, that would certainly be worthwhile.

“Yes but,” Yuzuriha spoke first, “I don’t know what use a writer would be to you right now.”

“Hm, you’re right. Then for now, she’ll stay here as a statue.”

“Y/n,” it was a breathless whisper because this place had crappy terrain and definitely not because he was trying not to cry.

Senku laughs, a wet and broken sound, because she's crouched in a defensive position with her hands covering her neck. He can see the way her eyes are screwed shut, even though her head is tucked just a bit.

Their conversation from that fateful morning echoes in his head.

“You can revive her. You deserve that much after everything you’ve done.”

He turns to find Ukyo holding out a bottle of revival fluid. Taiju, Yuzuriha, Nikki, and Gen stand with him. A silent assurance that he’s earned this. The bottle feels strangely heavy in his hand.

They have a limited supply, it’ll take time to make more, but even if he can’t find a reason he should revive her, he also can’t come up with a reason as to why he can’t.

Senku pulls the fur from Tsukasa’s throne and then kneels before her, throwing it over her curled body. He pulls the cork from the bottle and pours it out over her head.

Crack.

The stones tumble to the ground, and he watches the tension drop from her body.

“Hey,” Senku calls softly, “morning sleepy head. That was quite a nap you took.”

Stupid headcanons for (almost) every drst character GO!

Luna has a history of dead pet goldfishes. So many of them died you can make a whole book out of it.

Ryusui had a wattpad phase and would write stories about himself being the chosen one with a harem of his favorite characters. Then sailoring hyperfixation came in and has him on chokehold to this day.

Kirisame has a tongue long enough she can stick the tip up her nostril. She doesn't do that for… Pretty obvious reasons. (Moz once challenged her to lick her elbow. She did.)

Ruri has troubles navigating because she a good portion of her life in isolation. She also has a habit of zoning out at inconvenient times.

Xeno's favorite chess piece is knight. He justifies it by claiming knights are interesting by unique design and move patterns.

Matsukaze was a serious kid, and wasn't well liked because of that. His master was one of his few only friends.

Senku tends to put too much on himself, refusing to acknowledge that he sometimes need to step down from his current grandiose plan and rest. Someone give the leek boy a hug :(.

Charlotte could've been really good at chess, but because she starts getting nervous and overthinks her every move she ends up losing to anyone who knows the bare minimum.

Stanley is not allowed behind the wheel because he drives like crazy. The only madman who ever agreed to take a ride on his bike was Xeno (it was an emergency and he regretted every second of it).

Amaryllis is allergic to mangoes.

Hyoga has achromatopsia. Basically, he can only see in monochrome.

Taiju can chew lemons with ease. He doesn't understand what's up with people thinking they're too sour.

Homura is selectively mute. She hates having to talk to strangers.

Minami has a great sense of style and adores cute accessories. She shares tips with Nikki often.

Ukyo is popular with ladies.

Tsukasa has cute handwriting.

Gen has decent sewing skills. Yuzuriha once offered to tutor him, but he refused, "though [he] usually can't say no to a cute girl."

Chelsea is really good at climbing trees. She always climbs trees when she's annoyed at someone.

Moz was expected to be a proper heir to their warrior clan, but decided to be a problem child to piss everyone off (their father in particular).

Sai is the scariest opponent you can face off in beach volleyball. He once hit a ball so hard the ball managed to knocked Ryusui into the sand (regrets it to this day).

Francois smells like fresh bread and sweet cologne that was Ryusui's gift.

Yuzuriha used to braid her hair a lot, before it was cut. She grew to like it so much she kept the hairstyle permanently.

When Chrome says he knows a shortcut, it means he's ten billion percent honest and the shortcut is legit.

Kohaku spend so much time running and fighting on platforms her ankles fear nothing at this point. Give her stilettos and she'll perform the same stunts, albeit with a little more effort needed.
