Chapter Two: End
Terror | Vergo | Trial End | Re: Execution
They were a coward, weren't they?
Vergo knows this. They know it as Jun and Kaguya say it, as the votes roll in, as the culprit is sent to her doom. Eyes locked on the screens, that's all they know. As Kaguya is thrown into a pit of razor sharp 'stars', they feel no victory.
They're a coward. There is no honor in this death. There will be none in any further deaths. At the end of all this, there will just be a mound of corpses hoping to be martyrs. At the end of all this, they'll still be a coward wishing the votes hadn't turned out this way.
Kaguya is dead. Takumi's death was in vain. There is no vengeance here. A demon with a familiar face awaits them in some second life.
Vergo turns and shambles out without another word.
Hollow Justice | Jun | Trial End | Re: Execution
As the tally flashes before their eyes, a conflicted mixture of relief and disappointment churns in Jun's gut. Only Kaguya's marred soul will die. Justice is being served. But with her dies some slim chance at improving their odds, the purpose of Mars' forgiveness, the potential for (in some horrible way) Takumi's death meaning something good for them.
If only Kaguya would make this easier by doubling down on how horrible she must be. She tries, she certainly tries, but those last words betray her heart in this penultimate moment. At the end of the day, Minase Kaguya could not convincingly play something rotted to its very core.
Accepting the burden of the living, Jun stares at Kaguya as she's slowly pulled behind that door, stares at the screens broadcasting her death. There is honor in a woman accepting her fate. Jun's wrapped hand slowly comes to rest over her heart in a fist at the sight, the same gesture she'd given Yoshiko. She does not blink. She does not flinch. That brutal death may not go fully understood by her, but it will not go unwitnessed.
Once it ends (and it must, her life ended, the creaking dying out, Yagi-chan's words hollow and meaningless in her ears) she squares her shoulders and walks straight for Mars' podium, extending her hand for him to take.
As the Stars Fortold | Chapter Two
The low creaking of those hanging barbed wires continue to fill the trial room, until eventually the screen flickered away from Kaguya Minase's corpse and back to Yagi-chan.
"How fitting. A girl who pretended to speak for the stars- strung up and carved apart beneath them. ...One could say that she died as she lived- making others fear the future."
Twelve students remained in the courtroom now that Kaguya and Takumi's lives had been extinguished. Four people had died since they arrived in this facility, and the burning question was, how many more would join their ranks.
"She was cruel, manipulative, and arrogant. The world is a better place without her. Nevertheless, even I cannot deny her effort in playing the game exactly as it was designed. She understood something most of you still refuse to admit: survival here is not about virtue- it is about leverage. Even despite her confession, she still nearly won.... an interesting development with its own implications."
"Alas, her blood is still on your hands- and you remain no closer to escape. With every lost life, you prove the necessity of this game. You demonstrate your inability to think beyond your own selfish desires. You reinforce the need for me to guide you."
"Deeper and deeper we voyage. Further and further we dissolve. Closer to death- and yet..."
"Well, no. I am certain you already have much to think about. Some mysteries must remain, after all."
"Until next time, Student Council. We enjoyed this."
With that, Yagi-chan vanished from the screen, leaving a simple message behind.
Second Class Trial Complete. Please Depart the Trial Grounds.
The elevator door that you came from, the one directly across from Yagi-chan’s screen, opens up. Whenever they were ready, the Student Council could leave their podiums and return to the bunker above.
EXECUTION | Kaguya | Chapter Two | Trial 2
(CW: Hanging imagery, blood, sharp cuts)
EXECUTION BEGIN: HANGING OF THE RAZOR-TONGUED WITCH
The screen that shows Yagi-chan, just like with Yoshiko, changes to give you all the show that is the hanging of the Witch of Unluck. The Human Incarnation of the Goddess of the Moon. Lady Tsukuyomi.
Dreamend Discharger | Kaguya | Trial 2 | RE: All
The results are close…she was so close if only they just believed. But they chose not to and so they have penned their own fates. Kaguya Minase was going to die either today or the day she saved them. Ever since she killed Takumi Nishikawa she knew that her fate was sealed and this is just the way that it has to be. She will not cry. She will not beg. She will not go out as a shameful display. If Kaguya is going to die then it will be on her own terms.
“Hmmm…how unfortunate for you all. Isn’t it sad that some of your friends here had such petty grudges against me that they decided their feelings or worthless personal philosophies are far more important than your lives? You could’ve had someone on the outside but some of you decided not to do that. You’ve decided to let Yagi-chan bend you over like the worthless little bitches that you are. I had it in me to try and make the hard choices that needed to be made to save lives and I did. So I can die proud of that. You think that you all are so good because you got to play little detectives and solve the mystery? This is real life. It’s not a mystery novel. There is no satisfying end where you are all rewarded for your hard work.”
And she grins. That malicious ear to ear grin as the podium clamps down on her all around. Holding her in place. She shows no signs of fear…no signs of terror. Only that cocky smile that she wants to go out with.
“The reward is that now you’re all going to die with no hope of rescue. Under the whims of Yagi-chan you’re all going to get right back to killing each other like clockwork I’m sure. I hope it hurts when your greatest friend feeds you a poison that melts your guts. When you have a knife driven deep into your chest and through your cowardly hearts. When your head is smashed in so brutally that the only thing left of your face is brain mush and fragments of bone. Or…when you get to have the joys of being executed as brutally as Yoshiko-san and as brutally as I’m sure I’m about to be. And then when we meet in Hell I can laugh at you as I and the legion of demons I joined flay your skin and pull your guts from your body. But until then I hope Yagi-chan makes your lives as miserable as possible, kihihihi~”
She lets out a happy sigh. Her podium moves, taking her back to the door with her name on it. Kaguya was ready. She was ready to accept her punishment. Though her heart beats so strongly with fear in her chest. She doesn’t want to die…of course she doesn’t.
The podium is so close to reaching the door…it’s all almost over. She isn’t done speaking though…
“This doesn’t apply to those that tried to save me though. Tanaka-san, if you escape please find my friend Mugen Kizaki. He loves sweets and the most you could do for me is let him try one of your cakes. He would love it more than anything else. And also tell him I’m sorry for leaving him behind. I wish for you all another chance to escape and have a life where you can prosper. That’s my final prophecy. You all will. Thank you. I’ll tell Takumi-san you all said hello. Good luck…and fuck you, Yagi-chan.”
Her smile…was serene…gentle…and sweet.
The door closes forever and Kaguya Minase is gone.
A Crime of Chance | Chapter Two
With that, the trial came to a natural close. As with last time, the large LED screen above and behind Akira’s podium glitched, resulting in Yagi-chan counting the votes that were cast. Once again they were faced with a difficult decision, and time would only tell if they selected the right person to be doomed to execution.
“...It appears that the time is up. Congratulations, Student Council. Another trial, come and gone. Time certainly flies when you are having fun.”
Silence fell upon the courtroom, and everyone’s darkened expression fell upon two places among the thirteen survivors. First, the portrait of Takumi Nishikawa - a man who by all accounts only wanted to help prevent another murder, becoming a victim in turn. Second, to Kaguya Minase, whose account left many in the room feeling conflicted about what they should do or how they should vote.
“All of your votes have been accounted for. Due to our recording of the entire killing, we are fully aware of who the killer is and thus are able to make a sound and fair decision. Without further ado, allow us to present the results.”
As Yagi-chan spoke, everyone’s attention fixated on the giant screen. Each of the sixteen Student Council’s portraits could be seen in a row, and slowly but surely, tally marks appeared beside them. One by one, until all thirteen votes were recorded.
CLASS TRIAL RESULTS: THE CASE OF TAKUMI NISHIKAWA Kaguya Minase: 8 Yvon Bruckhard: 1 Jun Ichii: 1 Vergo Vendetto: 1 M4RS: 1 Haruko Tanaka: 1
The tally marks sat on the screen for a second, almost mockingly, before Yagi-chan appeared once more.
“You have reached a majority in identifying the culprit. Kaguya Minase, the Ultimate Astrologist, is indeed the one responsible for claiming the life of Takumi Nishikawa, the Ultimate Boxer. As is fair and customary, I will now illuminate the details of how the murder took place. I request your full attention for this endeavor.”
As each Student Council Member gazed toward the screen, they could only anticipate what they were about to see. A video file started to play - edited in a way that only showed the important camera footage as Yagi-chan narrated the events.
Flourless Chocolate Torte | Haruko | Trial 2.5 | Re: Kaguya
"Goodbye Kaguya. I'm sorry that it had to happen this way, but it was never going to have another outcome. I do not respect your actions, but I understand what led you to them. If you have any final requests... Well it'd be the least I could do per our alliance."
While her words speak one simple truth, Haruko Tanaka keeps one secret to herself now. It is not Kaguya Minase.
She does not take pleasure in this action. Instead she takes it knowing it will fail, but allowing that failure to ease the guilt that had been gnawing at her. To flame the hope that maybe, just maybe, Kaguya could actually save them.
This secret will die with her some day. Perhaps some day soon. But someday it will. Much like how her own secret now dies with Kaguya.
