Day 23: Stuff!
So far, I’ve added enemies that attack you, getting hit, and special weapons! Special weapons have limited ammo, but can do stuff that hammers can’t. This video showcases some of the abilities you have while using them, and the handy-dandy feature that allows you to switch between hammers and your special weapon. So far, there are three cool weapons.
The Machete: A knife used for very close-range attacks... weak in comparison to other items, but can be used to chop down some kinds of tall grass (and other things?) and deals a bit more damage than the hammer. Still working on balancing this.
Cherry Bombs: Bombs that roll around, dealing mass damage to whatever badguy it hits. It deals around 30-40 damage, killing standard enemies such as the Turret in one hit. This will be balanced slightly.
AK-8087: Being a parody of the AK-47, this gun shoots fluorescent aqua bullets that deal little damage, but fire very quickly.
Ideally, there’ll be around 30 special weapons, with some of them being very, very cool. Up next, I’ll try to implement the following special weapons: Freeze Ray, Flamethrower, Land Mines, BIG Axe, Swapgun, Rocket Launcher
Stay tuned for more updates on MAGIOY 2016!
Hello there Tumblr! This is @nerdylizardeperson, making an entirely new account for a project I’m working on. As an aspiring game developer, I have tried time and time again to create the next big game. However, I have continuously scrapped projects, barely getting anywhere with my efforts. As a new year’s resolution, I have decided to finally make a fully-fledged game this year, hence my project, named “M.A.G.I.O.Y. 2016″. MAGIOY (mæ-gi-oi) stands for “Make a Game In One Year”, and in this challenge I’ve made I am going to try and make as good of a game I can by January 1st, 2017, using Game Maker 8.
As you can see, I’ve decided to make a sequel to a game that I used to play 8-10 years ago, a game called Dr. Lunatic: Supreme With Cheese by Hamumu Software. It’s a game about a green-shirted bald guy who smashes evil vegetables (and other evil beings, in forms such as skeletons and zombies) against a mad scientist planning to use an army of giant zombies to take over the world (and the mad scientist’s poker buddies). Very interesting setup, alongside a very visually appealing design and fun gameplay. The game was released in 2003 - a whopping 13 years ago.
Why remake the game? Well, there’s a lot of good reasons to do so. First of all, the game engine for Dr. Lunatic: Supreme with Cheese has a few downsides, as the original engine was made in 1998 for Spooky Castle, the predecessor of SWC.
Graphics: The game can only process 256 colors, whereas any shades of the color orange (except brown) cannot be displayed.
Memory: New features cannot be added due to the fragility of the engine. From what I’ve heard, any additional additions could break the game. It’s kind of like what happened with The Binding of Isaac.
Modernization: With newer and newer computers being made, SWC could end up becoming unplayable on future operating systems.
There are likely other reasons, but I can’t think of all of them right now. Too lazy. Anywho... here’s one of the songs in the DrL:TDDE. The title screen. The reason I decided to go with “The Deep Dish Edition” was as a nod to the previous game, which is slightly pizza-themed. And deep dish pizzas have a lot of stuff in them.
Back to making music! Tomorrow, I plan on using what I have for an engine and creating a tutorial world. Hopefully by the end of this week, I will have screenshots (with poorly-made placeholder sprites!)
