Dr. Peter Killcommons on Medweb’s Involvement in Bringing Telemedicine to Afghanistan

At the First Annual Armenian International Congress in Yerevan, Armenia, Dr. Peter Killcommons, who is the CEO of Medweb, gave a keynote presentation on his experiences with the implementation of telemedical technologies in Eastern Afghanistan and Medweb’s persistent efforts there to support a healthcare system that is underdeveloped and plagued by infrastructural problems such as irregular access to electricity and needed medical equipment. Despite these significant challenges, Medweb has worked consistently with its partners in the region, including healthcare professionals in Pakistan and India, to develop a reliable network upon which physicians who are serving rural areas in Afghanistan can draw. During his visit to Armenia, Dr. Killcommons donated a telemedicine system to the Armenian Telemedicine Association, which will allow healthcare officials in Armenia to expand and improve the quality of healthcare to their rural areas. I admire Ben Stein's insight in the realm of personal finance. That admiration has made The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing: Do's and Don'ts to Protect Your Financial Life a must-read and a mainstay on my reading table.

Co-written by Phil DeMuth, The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing includes dozens of helpful gems of wisdom and warnings pertaining to, as the subtitle suggests, the do's and don'ts of personal finance. Each tip is presented in bite-size form, with greater detail provided. This makes The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing perfect for those with lots of time to thoroughly analyze every point, as well as those who, like myself, have only an hour or two to read every so often.

Additionally, the tips hold time-proven knowledge. For example, authors Stein and DeMuth advise readers to buy and hold rather than buy and sell. Let your acquisitions percolate for a time; resist the urge to sell when the market experiences swift and sudden upheaval, as it so often does.

The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing holds extra appeal for readers who enjoy humor. Realizing that the subject of finance can quickly degenerate into dry reading, no matter how helpful the advice is; Ben Stein and Phil DeMuth employ liberal humor throughout the book, which kept my attention from beginning to end. Humor combined with solid financial advice makes The Little Book of Bulletproof Investing a double recommendation: come for the advice, stay for the witty and insightful authorship.

Pens for Peace By Dr. Peter Killcommons

As First Lieutenant Andrew Rinehart and his men attempted to make peace gestures with local schoolchildren in Afghanistan by handing out candy, they were surprised to see them taking pens and pencils from soldier’s uniforms instead. After acquiring an interpreter, Rinehart asked why the children preferred writing utensils to sweets. They gave a unanimous answer: they needed better methods for writing at school.

Even when they had no access to paper, the children would write on their own hands and arms. That year, Rinehart urged his family and friends to forego presents and instead send school supplies to the children in Afghanistan. He called the project Pens for Peace. Rinehart learned about the importance of education to improving the futures of Afghani children through Greg Mortenson’s book Three Cups of Tea and wanted to make his own contribution to their welfare. Soon, schools, churches, and universities began collecting supplies in support of Pens for Peace.

Already involved with many healthcare initiatives in the Middle East and a fan of Mortenson’s work, I was excited to hear about Rinehart’s program. I have subsequently donated significant time and resources, as well as those of my company, Medweb, to the cause. By delivering pens to local children, American soldiers in Afghanistan forge a deep connection to the community, creating a foundation of trust and building toward a better future.

Mortenson also founded the Central Asia Institute (CAI), a nonprofit that promotes education and literacy among adolescents in Pakistan and Afghanistan. Focusing especially on girls, CAI hopes to bring organic stability and socio-economic reform to the region by ensuring individuals have an understanding of basic health and sanitation principles. Mortenson believes that we will find peace through education, not through anti-terrorist efforts. Programs like Pens for Peace provide an excellent complement to CAI’s work, working toward a day when all children have access to a high quality education.
