The Power of Love by Drachea Rannak

I know for a fact that I was most likely not dancing to "The Power of Love" from the Sailor Moon R movie during the photo that Drachea used as a reference... But, the song did play during my wedding reception, so that's what I'm calling this post!

I swear, if you had told 10-year-old me that the artist whose work on the Sailor Scout Maker she had become obsessed with was eventually going to gift her artwork of her in her wedding dress... She would have called you a liar!

He has done so much work for Marshal and me over the years and every ounce of it has been more than worth it! We both have body pillows that have his art on them. There's a custom wall scroll of the OG image of Slipstream and Kaiju hanging on our bedroom door. There's a big wall scroll of art that he did of Sailor Melody hanging on my office door. The image that he did for my PC desktop has been printed, framed and is hanging in my office. Hell, I've even got 2 designs that he did tattooed onto my back and forearm. We even used custom acrylic stands of the wedding image of Slipstream and Kaiju as our cake topper, and the centerpiece to our table at the reception. The image was also used to announce our engagement and on the collage of wedding photos that hangs in our living room!

It looks like he used this photo as a reference!

I DEFINITELY have to print at least 1 version of the pic he did so I can print and frame it for my house!

An Introduction to Nads6969

Let me start off by saying that 37 year-old Nadia Stepputat, aka Nads6969, is the inspiration for this site.

An avid fan of Sailor Moon, she has devoted 12 years to creating artwork, fanfiction, and original characters.  There is no denying that she is passionate about the franchise, and that art is her outlet for an otherwise humdrum life as a stay-at-home single mother.

But every artist has their limits, and hers are more obvious than others.  The fact of the matter is, Nads6969 cannot draw very well on her own, and admits on the front page of her Deviantart that she “sometimes traces” in order to perfect the Sailor Moon art style.

But what happens when “sometimes” becomes “often?”  What happens when “sometimes” becomes “almost all the time?”

That’s where my experience, and the experience of many, MANY others, comes in, as detailed in these journals documenting Ms. Stepputat’s behavior and actions:

In 12 years, Ms. Stepputat has traced off of the works of nearly 100 different artists across Facebook, Deviantart, Tumblr, Pixiv, Twitter, and Instagram.  She might trace up to 90% of someone else’s work, then add a paltry message on her traced version claiming she “used a reference.”  Her fundamental misunderstanding of the difference between “referencing” and “tracing” is what has fueled a growing base against her, and the more people attempt to correct her, the more she digs her heels in and swears adamantly that she is not in the wrong for her actions.

Whether or not something has an actual on-paper copyright on their work, whether or not you are passionate against or indifferent towards the practice of tracing, the work is still the property of the original artist and they can decide who gets to use it and how.  So if people have disclaimers on their work saying “don’t trace/copy,” or if they don’t have such a disclaimer but are still not okay with people tracing/copying their work, they get the final say.

Unfortunately, Ms. Stepputat’s victims’ complaints against her and requests for her not to trace their art have fallen on deaf ears.  She has been banned from Artstation, WeHeartIt, and Pinterest after many people submitted DMCA takedown notices against her for unauthorized use of their work without their permission, and her remaining strongholds are Deviantart and Facebook.

The purpose of this site, then, is to document the staggering amount of artwork she has traced without permission and without remorse, and the effect that her actions have had on her victims and the art community.

Sailor Melody has arrived!

Thank you Drachea Rannak for fulfilling a nearly 20-year-old dream!

Years ago, when I was around 11 years old, I first discovered the Sailor Scout Maker on Doll Divine. After having been a Sailor Moon fan for as long as I could remember, I was finally able to make myself into a Sailor Scout. The art for the game was so beautiful that I promised myself that I would, one day, see about commissioning Drachea for a formal image of Sailor Melody.

She's gone through many outfit and back story changes over the years. But 1 thing has remained the same since I first made her up when I was just a little girl playing in my backyard. She is me. She is the version of me with a better life and the powers I've always wished to have. The princess of her own planet who stands up for justice, fights evil, and falls in love. This is her final design.

I'm currently 29 years old, have adult responsibilities, and am even getting married in a little over a year... But, out of all of my childhood whims and desires, Sailor Melody, and my promise to have Drachea draw her have never left me. I am aware of the basic fact that I am no longer the little girl playing in her backyard or the girl who spent most of high school staring out of windows while dreaming of the faraway planet Melody and being its protector...

But, especially in times like these, we should all find ways to fulfill our childhood dreams, right?

While this isn't the first piece, I've gotten from Drachea, and I certainly hope it won't be the last, it is definitely one of the most meaningful. As it fulfills a nearly 20-year-old dream. I am now able to look back at my childhood self and tell her, "Yes, I did get that. And it's more amazing than you could ever dream of.

Keep in mind, Drachea flat out told her to NOT trace his commissioned work.  I guess she thought he wouldn’t notice?

However, that doesn’t negate the fact that she stole Drachea’s wonderful work to get money for herself.  This is especially bad, since ASlaveToMyDeadHeart could have gotten quality work just by commissioning Drachea directly instead of getting Ms. Stepputat’s soulless bootleg disasters.

Drachea Rannak w.i.t.c.h art

Once Upon A Time.... I comissioned Drachea Rannak, famous for his Sailor Moon art and especially his take on Disney Princesses (and other heroines) turned into Sailor Guardians to draw Will from W.I.T.C.H

I didn’t have much money so all I could afford was a sketch. Said and doe (and remember I wanted it to be done in the Sailor Moon style, not the original style)

Then I started a Kickstarter project to get funds for the whole group in color....and we succeeded!

When this is done, I may or may not lunch a Kickstarter for the comics 1st season baddies, or just other important characters like Elyon, Caleb, Yan Lin, Oracle, Cedric , Phobos.....we’ll see.
