The Seer, Part Two -- Castlevania Fanfic.
The next morning, Alucard went to check on Sorin, who was still fast asleep on bed, cloak and all. It didn't look as though he had even moved an inch. He lay in the exact same position, still and silent, and in a deep slumber. Alucard wondered what sort of quest he must have endured getting here and where he had come from. All things he would be sure to ask eventually. But for now, he will let him rest. It was obvious that it was much needed.
Alucard assumed that when Sorin did wake up he would most likely be starving. He was sure Sorin must have some type of food on his person, but that didn't matter. Alucard decided to venture into the nearby forest in search of sustenance. The gaping hole in front of the castle was no inconvenience to him, he merely hovered crossed it. He would have to get around to fixing it at some point, though. Not many people travel this deep into the forest, but it would still be unwise to leave the Belmont hold exposed. And he owed it to Trevor to protect his family's history.
Alucard found much more in the forest than what he was looking for. About twenty meters into the lush trees, he found blood — Fresh blood. It trailed off further into the forest and he followed it. The trail led him to the body of a doe. What was left of it, at least? The poor thing was completely mutilated and barely recognizable. Nothing from this world would be capable of utterly annihilating a deer like this. Bloody, clawed footprints were stamped into the frosted grass but stopped abruptly. It appeared that whatever had made them suddenly vanished — or took flight.
Alucard furrowed his brow and clenched his jaw tightly as he took in the gruesome scene.
"Maybe there is some truth to this seer after all."
He left the corpse and went back to his search for food. He managed to hunt and kill a good sized rabbit with ease, then returned to the castle where he butchered and cooked it. Sorin was awake by the time he went to check on him a second time. Sorin sat on the bed, his legs crossed, eating an apple as he read a book. Upon Alucard's entry into the room, Sorin closed the book and set it aside.
"Good morning," Sorin said with a wide smile.
"Good Morning," Alucard replied, glancing down at the half-eaten apple in Sorin's hand. "I think I have something you may enjoy more than that. Come, why not put some meat in your belly?"
Sorin didn't even try to hide his excitement. He eagerly leaped up from the bed and followed Alucard as he led him to a dining room located in another part of the castle. His apple was delicious, but It wasn't every day that he got the chance to eat meat. He couldn't even remember when he had it last.
"You can read?" Alucard asked, tilting his head quizzically as he pulls out a chair and gestures for Sorin to sit.
"Yes, but not as well as I would like to be able to."
Sorin sat down at the table and Alucard sat across from him. He placed the apple core on the plate next to the delicious looking roasted rabbit.
"You're not going to eat any of this?"
Alucard simply shook his head. With that, Sorin began greedily devouring the rabbit. It was even more delicious than it looked and was the most satisfying thing he had had in ages. Alucard waited until Sorin was finished before he started his probing.
"Where are you from?"
"Targoviste."
"And you're still alive?"
"I left before the night armies came. Your father gave us one year, I made good use of it."
"I see. Anyway, your visions. What exactly did you see?"
"Well," Sorin said, picking up the apple core and putting it on the plate before pushing the plate aside. "As I told you, I saw a woman with white hair. She was tall and pale, and she was standing in front of an army of horrific creatures. There was a man to the left of her, tall with light colored hair. I couldn't hear them clearly, but they spoke of Wallachia, Braila specifically. A failure at Braila."
Alucard rested his elbows on the table and steepled his fingers, a contemplative look on his face.
"A failure at Braila," He repeated thoughtfully. Braila was where the castle was located before Sypha transported it here. "What happened at Braila?"
"I do not know," Sorin confessed with a defeated sigh. There was no rhyme or reason to his visions. They come on unexpectedly and vary drastically each time. Some times they passed quickly, maybe just a few seconds. But other times, they were longer and crystal clear.
Between the details of his vision and the mangled deer carcass, Alucard found himself starting to believe Sorin.
"I would tell you more if I could, but that is all I know. But with the size of her army, I can tell you the utmost certainly that her plans extend far beyond Braila."
"Very well," Alucard said as he rose from his chair.
Sorin gave him a bemused looked and went to stand up as well, but Alucard held out a hand to stop him. Alucard grabbed the plate from the table and left the room, returning moments late with a thick, leather-bound book.
"You said you can read," He said, slapping the book down on the table. "Can you read magic?"
Sorin stared at the book, his eyes the size of the plate Alucard had just cleared.
"Y-Yes," He stammered, flustered by the sheer enormity of the book. "But not well. And no, not magic."
"Well, that needs to change. If this is true, you're going to need to arm yourself with far more knowledge of these creatures."
"For what?"
"Well, surely you will accompany me on this venture?"
A smug smirk appeared on Alucard's face as he sat back down and cracked the book open. Sorin looked absolutely petrified, so much so that it was almost endearing.
The hours seemed to fly by as they sat there, Alucard relentlessly drilling Knowledge into the poor boy's head. He was astonished at just how little Sorin knew of magic. One would think that he would have at least known something, given the fact that he had the gift of sight. The natural ability was there, but the education was lacking. It was clear that he never attempted to research or understand his gift, or the power that came along with it. Without true understanding, being a Seer meant nothing.
"Can we take a break?" Sorin asked. As much as he wanted to learn, and appreciated Alucard's forced help, he was spent. There was no way he was going to retain any more information anyway. His brain felt like it was about to burst at the seams and spill everything he had just read right back into the book.
"Yes, I suppose we —"
A loud, animalistic screeching sound ripped through the castle. It was the most horrendously terrifying sound Sorin had ever heard, and it left an awful ringing in his ears.
"Night creatures?" Sorin asked, looking to Alucard with a look of absolute panic.
"Stay here," Alucard replied as quickly slammed the book closed and stood up.
"But —"
"Stay. Here."
Alucard's words were stern and absolute, and Sorin didn't dare to protest. All he could do was watch with wide eyes as Alucard disappeared from the room.
The bestial noises continued growing louder as Alucard exited the castle. There was no doubt in his mind that these were, indeed, that ghastly sounds of a night creature. They were loud and guttural, and too close for comfort. He drew his unusually long, slender blade and proceeded into the surrounding forest.
No sooner did he set foot into the forest did he hear a familiar voice yell, followed by the dying squall of the beast. 'It cannot be.. can it?' He thought as he rushed in the direction of the sound. Upon breaking through the trees, he found himself face to face with none other than his former comrades, Trevor Belmont, and Sypha Belnades. Their covered wagon was upturned and their horses were nowhere to be found. They must have been attacked by the creature on their way to the castle.
"So," Trevor said, rather nonchalantly. "You've got some demonic fucks running around your front yard if you hadn't noticed."
Trevor was recoiling his whip and Sypha was standing at his side, her hand resting gently on his shoulder.
"You don't say," Alucard retorted.
Sypha sighed through her nose and shook her head at their 'friendly' greeting.
"My friend, it is good to see you," She said, smiling up at Alucard.
"You as well," He replied, returning her smile.
"Hey, What about me?" Trevor interjected.
"What about you?" Alucard looked at him with a smirk and an arched brow.
"Oh, whatever, you vampiric bastard. Help me flip the wagon back over."
Alucard obliged. However, instead of helping Trevor, he just did it for him. Being a 'vampiric bastard' gave him the ability the pick up the heavy wagon with ease.
"Show off," Trevor mumbled as he folded his arms over his chest. Sypha, who was still beside him, nudged him with her elbow and laughed quietly.
"Why don't we head back to the castle? We can search for the horses in the morning."
Both men agreed, and the trio headed off towards the castle. Sorin met them at the door.
"I told you to stay put," Alucard said, a hint of annoyance in his voice.
"I did. I stayed in the castle. You didn't tell me to stay in that room specifically."
"D —"
"Who is this?" Trevor interrupted, earning him a nasty look from a rather irritated Alucard. Trevor, of course, wasn't bothered by this at all.
"My name is Sorin."
"Right, well. I'm Trevor, and this is Sypha. Anyway, what are you doing here?"
"Trevor! Don't be rude!" Sypha exclaimed loudly, slapping his arm with the back of her hand.
"Enough," Alucard demanded. "Come inside, sit down, and I'll explain everything."
The four of them all went inside and gathered around the same table Sorin and Alucard had been sitting at before Sypha and Trevor's arrival. A brief explanation from Alucard got everyone on the same page.
"Ah," Sypha said. "We were just in Braila. It's a wreck, completely destroyed. But there were no signs of any vampires."
"The night hordes, however," Trevor chimed into the conversation. "Seem to be growing rather than decreasing. No matter how many beasts we vanquish, they seem to come back ten fold."
"I see," Alucard nodded. "If there are no vampires there, perhaps they have retreated back to their place of origin to recover? The only vampire soldiers, other than my father's, that were in the castle that day wore Styrian colors."
"So, we should travel to Styria then?" Sorin asked.
"Wait, we?" Trevor asked incredulity.
"Oh, yes," Alucard said. "He's coming with us."
"You can't be serious? He's small, there's nothing to him. You didn't want him outside with one night creature, but you want to drag him into a war? Can he even defend himself?
Alucard's nostrils flared with suppressed anger as he took a deep breath in. He stood, grabbing the sleeve of Sorin's shirt and tugging him up to his feet as well.
"Let me worry about him. And Belmont, this topic is non-debatable. "
Without another word, Alucard turned on a heel and left the dining hall. Sorin was confused but didn't question anything. He merely bid Sypha and Trevor a good evening and followed after the half vampire.
Sypha and Trevor exchanged a confused look.
"What the fuck?" Trevor asked, rubbing his hand over his stubbly cheek in disbelief.
"I'm not sure," Sypha admitted with a slight shrug of her shoulders. She stood up and pressed a feather-light kiss to her companion's forehead. "But let's not lose sleep over it."
Trevor smiled at the sweet display of affection and nodded his head in agreement. Sypha was right. There's no use worrying over something that's 'nondebatable.'
(Notes -- I actually got on my laptop to do this chapter! As a result, it’s longer and has few typos haha. It’s probably just because he’s mine, but I think Sorin is an adorable little nugget ;A; I love him! And yay! Sypha and Trevor are here! This is kind of a filler chapter, so hopefully, it wasn’t too boring. I think it’s pretty cute, though. Anyway, thanks to everyone that read part one! You guys are great!)
