Day 2: Red

Giant Tubeworm (Riftia pachytila)

Acrylic ink, fake blood

One of my favourite hydrothermal vent creatures! They actually get their red colour from hemoglobin that they use to capture oxygen, hydrogen, sulfur and carbon dioxide so their endosymbionts can do chemosynthesis [1].

Day 3: Glitter

I was actually planning on skipping today but I saw a picture and had to paint it! [2]

TW: Candy Gore?

Stress doodle I made last night due to anxiety + some other stuff going on in my life. The creature depicted is supposed to be indescribable so that's why they have fish flesh but red blood and fangs. Was thinking about making this into a little sticker for myself because I liked the way it turned out.

What are the little thingies under percys eyes when you draw him im curious

My mind always goes to yuji itadori after he gets posessed by sukana and gets those little thingies because those are sukanas eyes but im guessing its probably not that

Oh my God, I’m SO glad you asked.

The red marks under my Percy’s eyes are inspired by a dragon fish’s bioluminescence. This type of deep-water fish has two matching areas under its eyes where photophores (cells that emit light) produce special infrared light, allowing the animal to hunt in the dark without other fish seeing it. In simpler terms, the red things create light that only the fish can see.

Canonically, as it’s mentioned in the second chapter of The Last Olympian, Percy has infrared vision, and I thought this would be a cool way to integrate it in his design.

Under the cut, there’s a few pictures of dragon fish, in case you’re curious. Sure, in my art, the red lights are exaggerated — but that’s just a stylistic choice.
