If the HON vampyre world is so matriarchal and woman-foreward... why did Anastasia take Dragon Lankford's last name when she married him, and why is that not considered so majorly unusual for a vampyre woman to do?

Dragon and Anastasia Lankford are an anomaly among married vampyres, in that Anastasia took her mate's last name.
Married vampyres usually don't take on their mate's last name, but when they do, it's usually a vampyre man taking a vampyre woman's last name, since it signifies their union while symbolically emulating the bond between priestess and her warrior.
Vampyre society today does have marriage equality, but there were only rites in place for women-women marriages for a long time, in the form of 'spiritual covenants' between high priestesses. In a spiritual convenant, a pair of high priestesses could rule a single House of Night together as "one spirit with four hands" and on paper would be as bound together as any married couple. High priestesses in committed relationships to one another took full advantage of this rite; some high priestesses still prefer convenants to marriage for various reasons. (Of course, convenants are only reserved for high priestesses, and all other vampyre women today get married the usual way.) Marriage equality for same-gender relationships came into effect around the 19th century for all vampyres, but in the eyes of the (human) law of their home countries, and ergo legally, did not exist until humans also gained marriage equality. When humans of the United States campaigned for marriage equality, many queer and LGBTQ+ vampyres campaigned alongside them.
I was so thirsty for Dragon Lankford in middle school, I forgot he has a WIFE😭💀
New chapter, new POV -- the NoHoper 3rd draft plan is going really well!
I agree with you, Dallas. But Nyx does not. As long as the House of Night serves Nyx, we will abide by her choices, even if she chooses forgiveness when we cannot.

Your life is better punishment then my blade. Go back to it and the bitterness worth which you live it.

I did not lose Anastasia. She was taken from me.
Dragon, Awakened
You drew me, Anastasia. You should know who I am.
