have been watching the 2023 c-drama "Destined" and oh boy that might be the most jarring tonal shift I've seen in a c-drama

I mean sure The Untamed goes from "sword wizard school shenanigans" to the fall of Lotus Pier without much breathing room but because of the way it starts ("Great news! Wei Wuxian is dead!") you know that the shift is coming. It's hard to take Wen Chao seriously but at least you know that there are Really Evil Villains out there and Bad Things are Going to Happen

but Destined is really 12-13 episodes of rom-com hijinks before people start dropping like flies. sure, there's political intrigue in the background so you know that the potential for Unfortunate Events is there but then they just do a hard turn into killing characters off right and left. in the space of two episodes they kill off at least 5, maybe 6 named characters? and sure we didn't like all those characters and some of them hadn't had a lot of dialogue but it was a LOT
