“Why do dragons always have to be at the top of mountains?” Mira grumbles under her breath, heaving herself another step.
“This is hardly on top of a mountain,” Zoey says, chuckling. Mira will never understand her boundless energy. “Anyway, you should be grateful they live in high caves and not, like, outside a village.”
“Can't a girl complain once in a while?” Mira says, pushing against Zoey's shoulder.
Zoey stumbles a step forward which would be fine except her foot lands on a too big branch that rolls under her and she nearly flips right off her feet. Mira grabs her just in time to help steady her flailing body.
“You good?” She asks, keeping one arm on Zoey's bicep. “Sorry, I didn't mean to actually knock you over.”
Zoey spins on her heel, Mira's hand falling away, and puts a hand over her chest. “Mira you always knock me off my feet,” she coos. Mira rolls her eyes (and if she flushes, no one can say it's not from this stupid hike).
“Whatever,” Mira says, rolling her eyes and forcefully spinning Zoey around again. “Pay attention to the trail. Eyes up.”
“As long yours are down,” Zoey adds, throwing a wink over her shoulder.
Exhaustion can’t be blamed for whatever happens on Mira's face now, but luckily Zoey has immediately taken the instruction and is dutifully watching their path. Silence settles between them again; not uncomfortably so. Mira has been traveling with Zoey for so long now that nothing is ever uncomfortable between them; besides, with Zoey, it won't last very long anyway.
By the time they reach the destined cave opening, Zoey has placed bets on the dragon's color (red, statistically), size (humongous), and hoard type (children’s dolls, for some reason?). All of which were placed, technically, against Mira– the only other person involved -using their shared pool of money.
“Are you sure we went the right way?” Zoey asks, lowering her voice to a whisper now. Dragons are generally asleep at this time, which is why people usually venture to their caves at night, but that would defeat the purpose of Zoey’s quest. “This looks awfully small for a dragon.”
Mira frowns. Zoey's right– she's not even sure the smallest dragon they've encountered would fit in there. Scanning her surroundings only supports the theory; all of the trees around them are perfectly intact, so no dragons have flown in and out of here, and the usual gouges in the earth from their massive claws are entirely absent.
Pausing to listen, the forest is eerily silent, like around dragon dens, but it could also just be the wildlife hiding from them; even if animals are unusually fond of Zoey, they don’t care much for Mira.
“It’s always a bit of a coin toss following hand scrawled directions from some random villager,” Mira shrugs. She doesn’t bother whispering anymore– nothing at all indicates a dragon has been anywhere near this cave. She turns to confirm just as much to Zoey only to be met with crushing disappointment on her face.
“I had a really good feeling about this one,” Zoey sighs. “I really thought…” She breathes out harshly and kicks at the dirt. “Sorry the hike was a waste,” she continues, glum.
“Time with you is never a waste,” Mira replies, without thought. When the words from her mouth catch up to her brain she’s quick to move along, “We can go back to the village and see if I read the map wrong?”
“It’s okay,” Zoey says, quick to shake off her despair. “It would be dark by the time we got back anyway.” She grins brightly at Mira, wiggles her eyebrows, and says, “How do you feel about spending the night in the definitely-not-a-dragon-cave?”
Mira has always envied Zoey’s quickly changing moods; wading through her own is like being stuck in mud. “Just because it’s not a dragon den, doesn’t mean something else isn’t in there,” Mira says, eyeing the cave opening skeptically. It’s still light out for now, but even then she can’t see much past the opening of the cave; it must dip down once you go in.
“That’s why I bring a knight around with me everywhere,” Zoey grins.
“A disgraced knight,” Mira corrects, drawing her sword anyway and moving closer to inspect. If this is something’s home, it's unlikely to be there now, but better to be safe. “The distinction is important.”
“Yes, yes,” Zoey drawls, walking past Mira, much less concerned with being cautious, “You’re so very cool, Mira. Put that away, there’s no one home during the day. Probably.”
Mira does not put her sword away, because one of them has to be interested in safety, but she does hurry to catch up and put Zoey behind her again. She was right in assuming that the cave has an incline once you get in, making the inside incredibly dark.
She’s about to tell Zoey that she’s not too interested in walking down there blindly, when rustling sounds outside snap Mira’s back to the woods, pushing Zoey back behind her again.
She really shouldn’t. She’s not even supposed to be here; Celine is going to kill her if she finds out. Or at least give her a lot of chores. Rumi presses against the tree she’s ducked behind, nails digging into the bark. She should have been paying more attention; should have known they were there before she got this close.
Her head just feels so full and her skin is itching. Why are they here? There are never people here. She should leave. She’s fully capable of navigating this woods without making a sound; she’d been careless coming in. They would chalk this up to a deer passing.
Rumi takes a deep breath, peels herself off the scraped up tree, and steps out onto the path.
“Uhm, hello,” she says, nervous, with an awkward wave.
