There are so many people complaining about the Dragonball references being overdone in My Adventures With Superman, but they don't understand that the best part of catching on that your story is referencing the Wizard of Oz is watching the references become more and more obvious.
You want the lion to show up. You want poppies, you want hot air balloons, you want our big scary overlord to be revealed as a small, frightened man. Once you've hit the first five beats, you want everything to play out, and you will cheer when a swarm of tiny minions takes to the air as someone screams "fly! Fly!"
There's a tipping point between "oh that was a clever reference" and "how many references can you stuff into this thing?", and we're well into the latter.
