There weren’t many that knew of the true bond between her and Sheik — it was primarily the castle staff that took care of the two of them (namely Zelda) and her father’s closest advisors. It wouldn’t have surprised her if this information was entirely new to Dion, though she hadn’t bothered to ask.
That particular bit of information seemed less important at the moment, given everything they’d just experienced. At the end of the day, she couldn’t hurt Sheik — she could barely defend herself against him, solely because she’d feared it would hurt him in the process. Ganondorf had already done enough damage to her brother, even if he couldn’t see it under the Demon King’s spell, and she was not about to add insult to injury.
She’d been lucky that Dion showed up when he did; call it another intervention by the Goddesses. He’d been right to question her when she failed to protect herself, especially when he knew she was more than capable of wielding a blade.
And Zelda decided there was no point in hiding the truth. There were few people she could trust these days, especially when Hyrule was under Ganondorf’s rule. She needed someone she could be honest with — someone other than Impa and the Sages. So with that decision, she perched up on a dry spot in their new hiding space and told him everything. Her half-brother that was half-Sheikah. Her dream that had warned her of Ganondorf’s intentions, which led to her recruiting Link. Ganondorf’s attack on the palace and Impa having to decide which of the two children she would take with her. All of it.
She even admitted to having believed Sheik to be dead. Yes, she was relieved to learn that her brother was still alive, but at what cost? Was this a fate worse than death?
Her head throbbed at the endless stream of thoughts circling through her mind, only broken by Dion finally taking a moment to speak up. It seemed as if it had taken some time for him to come up with what he wanted to say, but his tone felt genuine.
“There have been many days over these last seven years where I felt as if I failed him. I cannot help but question if there was more I could have done. If I had, maybe he—“
She didn’t know what she could have done. She didn’t know how the outcome could have possibly been changed in their favor. But Hylia above that didn’t stop her from thinking and wishing.
