Song Lan: What is your favorite fairytale?
Oh, I love fairytales and folklore, so I have lots and lots of favorites! They are mostly in Swedish tho, and there are many I don't know the names of, but some that come to mind are:
From the Brother Grimm's it's probably Cinderella, in the swedish translation, with pictures, that I read as a child.
Partly because the krokro krokro det är blod i flickans sko, skon lär mycket klämma, rätta bruden sitter hemma (i hope that's correct, it's been a long time since I read it) English version Rook di goo, rook di goo! There's blood in the shoe. The shoe is too tight, This bride is not right!, with its macabre rhyme, still pops up in my head from time to time, with its blend of beauty and darkness, that a lot of their stories have. I prefer the "melody" of the swedish one, while technically pretty much the same.
I also like Scandinavian folklore. It's been some time since I last read some, but two of the famous ones that comes to mind are "Det svarta skrinet och det röda" (The Black Box and the Red One), and "Prins Hatt under jorden" (Prince Hat under the Ground).
Astrid Lindgren's "Sunnanäng" (The Red Bird) and "Spelar min lind, sjunger min näktergal" ("My Nightingale is Singing) are also favorites that I reread occasionally.
And the really old story about the Skogsrå, the forest nymph of swedish folklore, that my grandmother had, deserves an honorable mention .
