The death of PSH is sad on many levels mostly because he had been sober for over 20 years and was only 46 years old. To replace like he did means he probably felt he had no where to go, to talk about his problems that were heading him to said relapse. The fact that addiction is so shameful in this country is a major factor in the difficulties in recovery. Because it's something that isn't to be talked about, or if it is talked about people laugh awkwardly. Damn I am running out of characters..
And he was in rehab. It wasn't like he wasn't trying to help himself, and it wasn't like he was trying to kill himself. He must have been in a bad place, like you said, and all people care about is how selfish he was for leaving his wife, three kids and his acting career behind.
