Sea Wolf
By Anna Burke The blurb from the publisher… In the year 2514, the only thing more dangerous than the seas is those who sail them. Life aboard the mercenary ship Man o’ War is rarely dull as hurricanes, swarms of jellyfish, and man-eating squid pose daily doses of danger. As intrigue and subterfuge from enemies old and new begin to surround its captain, the infamous Miranda Stillwater, even an…

How I read Shakespeare, and what I’ve discovered about the politics of his plays by doing so.
The second problem — and this one is a doozy — is that dramatic action is a term with no consensus definition...There’s been debates and symposia and panels on what the term might mean for hundreds of years. If you read, say, the great drama critic Eric Bentley’s essay on dramatic action, you can actually watch his brain melt out of his ears in real time as he tries to figure it out...
It was this triangulation that was most important for me in making Lend Me Your Ears. That podcast really grew out of a failure on my part. I was teaching Shakespeare the day after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States. And it was, for me and my students, a kind of traumatic event. We thought the world was headed in one direction, and it instead was headed in another, far more dangerous one, one we probably should have seen coming. This is the kind of event that Shakespeare wrote about all the time, of course. And yet that day, as I tried to talk to my students, I had nothing of Shakespeare’s to give them. I had no idea what to say.
Not sure how many plot clues we should guess from a single promo pic...but there’s already a lot of spec that clarke and Bellamy might have a bit of a journey back to co-leadership and that’s gonna be a storyline this season. I think and hope it’s gonna be really interesting.
Except JR said straight up that Bellamy was going to influence Clarke to be more holistic right from the start, didn’t he? And that was back at SDCC when they only had episode 1. So I’m not sure that’s what’s happening?
I think that might be coming more from the fears of the fandom? Clearly none of us know what’s going to happen and they cold take it that way and it wouldn’t necessarily be bad. I think it will take a while for them to settle back together, but maybe not. They got back together pretty quickly after Clarke left him for Polis. We all expected this big blow up about betrayal and some such and he was just like, nah, I don’t want to anymore. Let’s drink poison together. Hugging is good.
So who knows.
One thing I did notice about The 100, when I was comparing my own fanfic to the show, is The 100, while a very dramatic show, keeps a lot of the drama to very short bits, they don’t drag it out. It’s pretty subtle. The emotion is locked down. Even breaking down in tears or yelling is mere seconds of air time. They don’t use a lot of words, they don’t belabor emotions. They get in and get out. With emotion anyway. The writing is concise and the action moves fast.
And Bellamy, though he says forgiveness is hard for them, doesn’t seem to hold grudges and neither does Clarke. Octavia? Yes she does. Raven a bit. Murphy a bit. Jasper and Monty? yes. But not Clarke and Bellamy. Weird. They’re so practical.
Dramatic action needed on climate change
Dramatic action needed on #ClimateChange
The world must redouble efforts to halt global warming before it is too late, the UN’s climate chief said Monday as nearly 200 nations kicked off talks in Bonn.
“Our window of time for addressing climate change is closing very quickly,” Patricia Espinosa told journalists. “We need to dramatically increase our ambition.”
The 12-day technical talks are focused on hammering out an “operating manual”…

What’s with DRAMATIC ACTION? If you think it’s all about car chases, fist fights, and natural catastrophes, you’re in for a surprise.

A dramatic story will not be satisfying if it is merely about a breakdown. It also has to include a break-through - if there isn't the possibility of renewal or even liberation, there will be nothing to sustain our interest or need to find out 'what next'?
