this might be controversial and it’s not my intention to spread negativity on the drarry tag but im lowkey seething abt something and… it’s impossible to post this in the Drarry subreddit on Reddit bc there are rules against bashing other ships. So i’m posting this here💀
I can’t be the only drarry shipper who absolutely loathes Dramione… or the fact that right now, dramione is way more popular than drarry. And there’s TWO MAIN REASONS why i despise dramione’s popularity.
1) It’s literally Drarry but make it Worse, and Heterosexual.
Draco and Harry aren’t “enemies on opposite sides of a war” to be honest, they’re “enemies on opposite sides of the school yard”. Harry doesn’t see Draco as just another Death Eater, in deathly hallows he pities him and fears for him and understands that he was pressured into the dark side and that he doesn’t rlly support Voldemort, he’s just trying to survive and protect his family. This is all canon.
Harry doesn’t see Draco as an enemy of war, though he still sees Draco as his own personal Arch-nemesis purely bc of the rivalry and the history between them in school.
Harry hates Draco bc of how he acted in school, the things he said, the choices he made. DRACO HATES HARRY NOT BC HE IS A HALF-BLOOD, he hates Harry because HE’S JEALOUS AND FEELS HUMILIATED. Let’s all remember Draco wanted to befriend Harry at Madam Malkin’s when Harry looked malnourished, had messy hair and his glasses were held together with tape. And then when he learns he’s Harry Potter he also wants to befriend him.
He only starts to hate Harry when Harry refuses to be Draco’s friend. He feels humiliated by Ron laughing at his name. He feels humiliated by Harry not taking his hand.
So he doesn’t rlly HATE HARRY. He hates that Harry didn’t want to BE HIS FRIEND.
There’s also the fact that Draco feels entitled to attention and being in the spotlight, he wants to be liked by everyone. And yet here Harry Potter is, being adored by everyone for something he had no control over (killing voldemort as a baby). He feels jealous of harry’s fame.
So Drarry is the ultimate Enemies to Lovers bc their hatred stemmed from their personal issues with each other, the way they knew how to hit each other where it hurts the most.
It’s an enemies to lovers that isn’t born out of inequality. Sure, Draco bullies harry but to harry it’s just taunts. Harry hits him back.
Dramione, on the other hand, is the racist equivalent of Drarry. Draco doesn’t give a damn about Hermione (whereas Draco is hyperfocused on harry). Draco doesn’t KNOW hermione, he just hates her bc of her blood (similar to how a bully would hate a person of color for their skin color, not bc there’s history between them).
So it’s a cold and impersonal enemies to lovers, if you know what i mean? People just love shipping a person that hates an entire group of people bc #Racism with the person from said group of people. It’s like ppl that are obsessed with Jewish girl falling for Nazi soldier who later redeems himself…
It’s simply NOT A COOL enemies to lovers. And fine, ship it. But the reason it bothers me so much that Dramione is more popular than Drarry is that…
DRARRY IS LITERALLY THERE, PEOPLE JUST SHIP DRAMIONE BC IT’S HETEROSEXUAL.
Like if either draco or harry where a girl… i bet drarry would be way more popular. Imagine if Draco was a girl like in a Regina George way. And she despised Harry and they had a rivalry. People would IT EAT UP.
More so if Harry was a girl and draco the boy who hates her. Wowww people would be so obsessed.
Instead, they are two boys. So ofc the majority of people, due to heteronormativity and im sure a lot of them also due to homophobia, shifted their attention to an INVENTED RIVALRY.
Draco and Harry have a rivalry. They compete in Quidditch, draco taunts harry.
Draco and Hermione DO NOT have a rivalry. We don’t even know if they compete in their studies, ppl have invented that.
That’s the thing, if ppl were more open to gay ships, everyone would ship Drarry bc it’s all THERE. Notice how dramione fanfics are so easily turned into original novels vs Drarry fanfics aren’t?
It’s bc drarry is SO ROOTED IN CANON MATERIAL, YOU CAN’T SEPARATE THE SHIP FROM CANON. If they actually just wanted a good and compelling enemies to lovers, they’d just ship Drarry, bc the chemistry is there, the mocking, the Quidditch rivalry, draco creating potter stinks badges, Harry stalking draco…
Not to mention how the entire arc of harry potter is rooted in Drarry.
The prophecy about the Chosen One? “The one with the power to vanquish the dark lord approaches… and you know how harry defeats voldemort?
WITH DRACO’S WAND. Draco’s wand changing loyalty (and thus, metaphorically, draco changing loyalty) is the reason harry could defeat Voldemort. Draco’s wand was the elder wand in the end.
The power of drarry defeated voldemort lmfaooo.
Dramione doesn’t have any of that. If people actually cared about a well-written Enemies to lovers, they’d ship Drarry. Instead, they have to invent a fake rivalry between draco and hermione and pretend like they hated each other when in reality draco was just racist towards hermione.
So it bothers me, yeah, that the most popular Draco fic in AO3 is “Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying ordeal of being in love” (which i’ve read!!! In an unbiased way bc my dramione friend recommended it to me! AND IT’S NOT THAT GOOD. IT’S MID. EVITATIVE AND RUNNING ON AIR ARE WAY BETTER).
2) The second reason i despise Dramione is, like i’ve said, bc it’s literally racist? It’s the magical equivalent of a Nazi soldier falling for a jewish girl. It’s just weird. People hated that movie (with the trope i just mentioned) bc it is blatantly disgusting and disrespectful to jewish people to ship an oppressed with the oppressor.
But suddenly when it’s harry potter they all romanticize draco’s bullying towards hermione? They all forgive draco hurling a slur against her? They all forget that he’s her oppressor? I don’t get it.
Like i said, draco hated harry bc of jealousy. Draco simply hated hermione bc of her blood heritage. It’s simply weird to ship them, and pretend like they make a good enemies to lovers dynamic.
I don’t know, i had to vent bc i just searched the AO3 tag and i saw that many dramione fanfics were more popular than drarry and it makes me super furious. Like YEAAAHH at the end of the day, it’s not that serious and it’s just a ship. But damn. I hate dramione with a burning passion🤣🤣
