Been watching the Terror, which reminded me of an episode of Lore, called The Shortest Straw. It surprisingly doesn't even touch on the Terror but focuses on other instances of cannibalism on doomed voyages.

"The Custom of the Sea" or "Law of Necessity" was very well known among the public. If, in a desperate situation, there was a hope of surviving by eating a member of the crew, they'd draw straws. Whoever drew the shortest straw would be sacrificed, and whoever drew the second shortest straw would have to do the slaughter. That way, everyone had an equal chance for survival, the weak weren't preyed upon, and only one would bear the sin of murder and butchery. Also, cannibalism wasn't just eating someone's flesh; it was also drinking their blood for hydration. Most accounts from the 1800s, sailors were pretty candid and honest about eating each other for survival, very matter of fact. It wouldn't be formally challenged in the UK court until 1884.

So the crews of the Terror and Erebus would have definitely used it, multiple times. It's wild to me to think about those straws, what they were made of, some thread pulled from a frayed shirt, or splinters from the wood of the boats. Discarded or lost or even kept? Lots of real reports had people argue, not against getting eaten, but wanting to take someone's place who was to be eaten! Imagine Crozier getting chosen and Fitzjames demands to take his place. Imagine Collins drawing the second shortest straw, asking Goodsir for advice on how to make it as painless as possible or what cuts to make. Bridgens is holding the straws and can feel in his hand which is the shortest so he shifts it away when Peglar reaches for it unknowingly. Hickey gets the shortest and several people snaps their straw to try to make theirs the second shortest. And don't get me started on the homoeroticism of drinking another man's blood.

Update on Choose Your Own Shipping Adventure!

So right now I have a few of the stories outlined, but most of the artwork done. It's going to play like an interactive novel, where you click on links that take you to the different story arc you've chosen for the couple.

This is Voltron shipping, and right now because this is my first attempt at something like this I'm trying to explore my options. Right now the easiest for me was Pidge pairings, but I couldn't include all of her ships-- like Shidge and Pallura. It would've taken too much time and I wanted to be able to release this little game for you guys. We do however have Plance, Punk, and Kidge! So three different ships with roughly about

8 different endings for each.

(Please keep in mind I'm not Pidge and I'm terrible at math, so there's probably way more if I'm being honest)

It's a lot.

I'm also thinking about releasing them as daily chapters (if I can crank them out that fast) so I suppose I'm wondering what the preferences would be? Would you rather I release them slowly and as I make it, or wait a bit longer and release them all at once?

Anyways, back into the story!

This little story I've created is called "Drawing Straws," and it begins with the boys (Keith, Lance, and Hunk) going to find Pidge who is off on her own again in the castle. The find her, only to see she fell asleep working again. The boys have created a system for when this happens, and begin drawing straws for who has to carry her back to her room.

You, the reader, decides who draws the straw.

Once you're into the storyline of your chosen ship, decisions begin to have consequences. You get to decide how angsty or fluffy it gets.
