Tennessee folks!

There are 2 bills coming up in both the House Education Subcommittee and Senate Education Committee: HB 1992 and SB 1951, that will give undocumented students in-state tuition (Undocumented students currently pay out of state tuition which can be up to 3 times more expensive, even if they have went to Tennessee schools their whole lives) at all TN colleges and universities if they have graduated from a TN high school and have attended a school in TN for the past 5 years, and have at least a 3.0 GPA or a 21 on the ACT exam. The vote for the House bill is tomorrow! So ya'll should call your local representatives and tell them to support HB 1992, and tell your friends to! (especially if they are teachers) SB 1951 is also coming up on Wednesday. Here is an example of what you can tell them: "I’m calling you to ask you to support HB1992. All TN graduates should receive in-state tuition and the chance to pursue their dreams, regardless of their immigration status. Please vote YES on HB 1992!" Adriana left 3-months before DACA was announced because she was tired of worrying, each night, whether her mom would come home to her or end up in one of Sheriff Joe Arpaio's jails. Luis Leon left North Carolina in 2011 because he was banned from attending the community college system. Maria Peniche, of Revere, Massachusetts, left with her younger brother and parents just 3-days before DACA was announced, they left because Maria too had dreams of one-day attending college. Claudia Amaro came to this country because her father was murdered in Mexico; she lived in Kansas for more than 17-years before being deported with her 5-year old U.S. Citizen son. Mario Felix attended schools in the U.S. for years, but left so he could take care of his great grandmother, fearing he would never see her again. Ceferino Santiago was forced to leave his family in Lexington, Kentucky because he needed a $21,000 surgery; his life depended on his leaving and now, just like the rest of the DREAM 9, he is ready to come home and re-unite with his community. These Dreamers, despite having the same dreams as the thousands living in the United States, have no way of qualifying for DACA and other relief because their life circumstances forced them to leave.

If you are undocumented and meet the following criteria, we encourage you to sign up to take the survey:

1) Currently live in the United States, but were born in another country; 2) Are between the ages of 18-32; 3) Are not a U.S. citizen; 4) Are not a legal permanent resident; 5) Arrived in the U.S. before age 16 and; 6) Have not left the United States in the last 5 years.

The participation of the survey is limited. Qualifying respondents will receive the survey via email on Monday, July 1st, 2013. In February of 2011 Maulilio was on his way to church when a motorcycle crashed into him. He waited for police to arrive as it wasn't his fault but instead of treating him the police had him arrested for driving without a license.

Maulilio has yet to meet his new born baby boy, his wife gave birth while he was detained. Maulilio's family needs him home; one of his children has a serious speech impairment and is need of therapy. According to his teachers he has not progressed at all since his father's detention last year.

Maulilio is a low-priority for deportation according to President Obama's own guidelines, why is he still facing deportation? To date the government has spent over $42,000 detaining him!

Now Maulilio is being told he will be deported in the next week! Can you help us stop this father of five's deportation by sharing his petition with a friend or two? This week Maulilio's church will be organizing events for him and we hope you will stand in solidarity with them and help us get the word out.

TIME Magazine came out with its list of the 100 Most Influential People in the World. Here's one I'd like to highlight for her work on an issue close to my heart: Dulce Matuz. Here's Eva Longoria's description of Matuz and her influence.

The U.S. immigration debate brings out the worst in some and the best in others. Dulce Matuz, 27, represents the finest of her generation, putting herself through college partly via scholarships and graduating with an electrical-engineering degree. An undocumented Latina confronted with legal barriers to pursuing her engineering dream, she chose to fight for the right to contribute to the country she has called home since she was young. As president of the Arizona Dream Act Coalition, Dulce promotes a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants who, like her, were brought to the U.S. before they were 16, attend college or serve in the military and are of good moral character. Dulce takes on powerful opponents with grace and conviction, saying, "We are Americans, and Americans don't give up."
