  The sky is painted with every color that Aether had forgotten, and it's enough that, even in the midst of this disaster, this assault, this raging building thrashing war - it's enough that he staggers to a stop, tripping over his own aching feet.   It's dawn, and the sun is rising.

  A long time ago, this had been Aether's favorite time of day. He would sit out on the porch with his brother and they would share tea and biscuits and relish the silence of their kingdom and   and   and now it's here again, dawn, the rising sun, light, colors.  Murk is at Aether's side in a matter of seconds. He puts one large hand on Aether's shoulders, a silent question. "y'kay?"  Aether leans into the touch. He curls a hand around Murk's wrist. "...Yes...I'm fine."   "y'stopped."   "The sun...it's rising. I haven't seen that in...a while. I'm sorry. We can go."   "s'okay. we c'n wai'." Murk signals to his brother. The other driad lurches to a stop, all wavering woven branch legs and bright, eye lights. "s'pretty."   Aether's ears twitch. He stares at the sun until it makes his eyes burn and then some, and Murk stands there with him, and Divine stands a few feet to the left, and for a moment, for this brief, fleeting moment, everything feels like it's going to be okay.   Someone screams in the distance. It doesn't shatter the illusion. Aether is used to the sound of screaming. the only strange thing is that it's not coming from him.  Eventually, though, the sun turns the sky to fire, and Murk makes a soft sound. "bettah?"   Aether nods. He tightens his grip on Murk's wrist. "Sorry...I just…"   "s'okay," says Murk, again, and he sounds like he means it. "i get it. s'nice here." His branches creak and groan. Leaves unfurl on his thick fingers. "y'wanna?"   It takes a moment for Aether to figure out what's being offered but - before, in the labs - Murk had lifted Aether up and carried him to safety, then, and that's being offered again, now, and it makes a spark flare to life in Aether's chest that has been gone for a very long time. Mouth curling into the softest sort of smiles, Aether turns around, offering his arms and   Murk lifts Aether up with no troubles, tucking him into the crook of one woven arm. "Divine. y'ready?"   Divine nods his agreement. The willow driad is quiet as whispers, as the creaking groan of too many branches protesting on a windy day.  "...Thank you." Aether leans his head against Murk's chest. One curling ram horn tangles in the branches. Leaves bloom around it, an errant pillow, a halo of green.   The color is captivating.   Every color is captivating.   Dawn has come, and it will come a thousand times more, just as it has come a thousand times in the past, and with this dawn there is one more steady truth.   Aether is free, and Murk will never let the labs take him back.
