Never in her lifetime did Ariadne think she’d ever attend a masked ball. But here she was, against her will thanks to a friend who wants her to find her Prince Charming.
“Stop complaining.” She would say. “Do you even know how many girls dream of this night?” Ariadne was unable to dream for a long time.
“Some of us don’t want to play Cinderella.” Ariadne had protested. “Some of us are happy with picking out lentils.” But there she was now, near the top of the stairs. The ballroom resembled that of one in a Disney movie. It reminded her a little of Cinderellas ballroom but she got a glimpse of Beauty and the Beast.
Her friend forced her into a gold cap sleeved gown that exposed her upper back. She didn’t even want to know how much the dress rental cost. Never had she worn something so upscale. No one would ever guess that she could have been a server. What would happen if she ripped it on accident?
A gold baroque mask was sealed around her eyes. The guests could not remove their masks until after midnight and hers was already starting to feel uncomfortable. The gold slippers on her feet were biting at her ankles. Weren’t flats supposed to be tolerable?
Her friend was distracted with her flirting so she wouldn’t notice if Ariadne slipped out. All the guys here looked really sketchy anyway. After thinking for a few moments, she decided to go back upstairs.
She turned and saw a guy standing behind her. Right away she knew she was not interested at all. He introduced himself and said, “And you are?”
“Leaving.” she turned back around but he grabbed her wrist.
“Don’t be like that.” he said. “Don’t you like nice guys?”
Yes I do and you are certainly not a nice guy.
Ariadne pulled away from him, ready to spit if need be.
“I’m not interested, ok?”
