The afternoon was growing uncomfortably hot as the sun reached its peak outside. Sitting on a chair across from John, Pattie observed him in silence with one of her eyebrows only slightly raised, allowing him to dodge her question without any further inquiries from her. Not saying a word in response, her lips became occupied by a cigarette that had been previously placed between her fingers, freeing her hands now in order to tie her hair to in a bun, allowing her to enjoy the breeze on her neck that was coming from the window near her seat. It mattered very little that he was unwilling to indulge her, because in his silence he told her more than his words could possibly have. Her husband had developed that same habit over the years - avoiding conversations if the subject made him uncomfortable or irritated. In his elusiveness, John had given her a brief glimpse of one of his burdens: his secrets, whatever they were. However intrigued to know if any of them could possibly be worse than the one they already shared, Pattie was satisfied enough not to insist on the subject.
Her cigarette reached its end, and after putting it out on the ashtray, Pattie took a small sip from the coffee she had been drinking, her face twisting with disgust upon the realization that the beverage had turned cold while she was distracted. ‘You are very expressive in your silence’, she remarked, standing up from her seat to take a few steps in his direction, watching his face closer. The observant expression on her face did not last very long, and soon a smile appeared on her lips, hoping to avoid any tension that could come from that dialogue. ‘Don’t worry’, said Pattie after lightly kissing one side of his face. ‘I think, perhaps, that I already know all I need to know about you’. With that, abruptly, she moved away from him, as her attention shifted back to the coffee that she still wanted to drink. It was as if she had never even asked him anything at all. ‘I’m making more coffee. Would you like some?’
