Steps to Mend
Oh hey guess what ya bitch is back with a little bit of Dreammare that I started months ago lmao
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nightmare took some convincing to let Ink host a party at his castle- "Why can't you just do it somewhere else?"- but eventually he agreed to it. Ink reasoned that out of the entire multiverse, Nightmare is the planeswalker with the biggest enclosed space and can therefore host the party.
"What for?" He had asked. Ink had only answered that it was just for fun, to bring the AUs together and have a good time. Nightmare reluctantly agreed- "Just don't fuck up my castle." And so it was agreed that Nightmare's castle was the place to go for the party.
Looking out across the crowd, Nightmare can't say he regrets it, either. Why stop them? They seem to be having a good time, and Dream would disapprove of him trying to prevent it. Speaking of Dream…
From the balcony, he can see the other standing, chatting with Ink, wearing a cream-colored suit with gold accents. It's a bit bittersweet to see him like this, but Nightmare can't help but admire him from where he is. Maybe he'll deign to come down and participate in the party. There's only one reason he'll do it, and Nightmare is looking right at him.
He decides he'll join in. Ink spots him as he leaves the balcony and nudges Dream, quietly mentioning that Nightmare had probably been watching over the party.
"What does it matter? It's unlikely that he'll get himself involved anyway. Not unless he feels he needs to show off as a host." Dream shakes his head, smiling softly at Ink. "Think nothing of it. There's a party in his castle, it's his business to watch."
"I suppose, but he was watching you."
That's a spark of hope for Dream.
Nightmare finally comes out, causing people to back away as he makes his way to his throne and sits down. There's tension for a few moments as the rest of his team follows and stands in front of him, but Nightmare dismisses them- "Go, have fun, but no harm should come to anyone here." He mutters something else to them sharply, then waves them off. They are delighted to join the party- except Error, who immediately finds a corner and settles there.
Nightmare leans back in his throne, fidgeting with his circlet that he had brought. He doesn't know whether he should put it on or not. He looks down at it, frowning a bit but then looking out across the crowd at Dream.
He places the crown on his head.
With that done, he walks out into the crowd, making conversation with a few (very scared) Sanses in the crowd but finding no interest in any of them. As a new slow song starts, Nightmare slides his way over to Dream, taking one of Dream's hands and placing his free hand on the other's waist. "Night-?"
"Just dance with me, Dream. I don't want to speak for now." Nightmare kisses Dream's forehead, smiling as the other places a hand on his shoulder in return. "There you go, Starlight…" he murmurs, guiding the other out onto the dancefloor, into the edge of the crowd. They take small steps, slowly moving along with the crowd and turning little by little. As the song goes on, Dream finds himself with his arm wrapped around Nightmare’s torso and his head leaning on the other’s chest. He misses having been close with Nightmare.
The music goes on, but Dream can hardly focus on it. As they slowly step and sway in unison, seemingly alone even in the crowd of people doing the same, Dream can't help but start to tear up. Does this mean peace for him and Nightmare? If only for a night, if only for a dance, he rests in the other's embrace and soaks in his presence.
This is only the beginning to a long recovery. These are only the first steps to mend.
Dream Protecc
In honor of my Google Doc title, that is that.
Moon is DS Night, Dream is Dream, Nightmare is Nightmare, Star is DS Dream, all the children's names are names I made up so uh,, yeah,,
Started out as a Vigilante (DS Night x OG Dream) idea tossed between @sleepyfan-blog and I, became something like this. Enjoy.
When Moon told Dream about his counterpart, Dream was disappointed to hear how much like Nightmare he was. He had eaten so many apples, though, so it was possible he’d be able to defeat Nightmare… No, it would be too dangerous to approach him. With so many guards and a huge organization built around him, Dream was sure Star would be hard to reach. Dream approved of his intentions for his organization, but the executions of such things were…poorly carried out, in Dream’s opinion. He definitely disagreed with Star hunting Nightmare down for being a criminal despite the fact that he had done nothing wrong.
One thing he did find to be good about his counterpart was that he visited the orphanage and played with the children whenever he had the time to. When Moon had showed him this, it had brought him a bit of hope; at least there was something about Star that he didn’t have any problems with. When Star was gone, Dream would visit and talk to the children, watch over them, give them fun games to play, but he wouldn’t tell them his name, so they all called him Mr. Yellow. Dream didn’t mind. It was easy for the smaller kids and it kept his identity pretty hard to figure out.
Everything was going well. Star hadn’t found out about him- with him being involved with Moon, Star wouldn’t be happy to have him around the children- and nothing bad had happened to anyone. Anyone who did get hurt- tripped over something, got a papercut, minor things- Dream was able to heal them rather easily. There was no shortage of positive energy in the orphanage while he was there. Today was a different story, though. Dream had sensed a hostile presence, an aura of anger and aggression nearby. As it got closer, a few more joined it. “That can’t be good,” he murmurs, looking around to try and find the sources. “Kids, get inside, all of you, now. There are bad people coming, and none of you need to get hurt.” Most of them looked around, scared, but went inside as they were told, trusting Dream and not wanting to get hurt. There were a few stragglers, though, who didn’t want to leave Dream when he said there were dangerous people coming. They wanted to make sure Dream would be okay.
“Mr. Yellow, w-what if you get hurt? I-I wanna help,” one of them says, stepping towards Dream with a determined expression on his face.
“No Alex, this isn't a chance for you to prove yourself to the others, this is a serious situation and I need to make sure you're all out of sight so they can't hurt you. I'd never forgive myself if one of you got hurt.” Dream shakes his head, gesturing for Alex to take the others inside.
“What about you? You could get hurt.” Alex only takes another step forwards while most of the others- except two of Alex's friends- leave. He was worried about this, and Dream was like a father to him, he really didn't want to lose him.
Dream's expression softens when he sees the concern in Alex's eyes. “Alex, I'll be fine, I promise. Not a scratch. I've dealt with much worse before. Now go inside, take your friends, get everyone to close the blinds. The little ones don't need to see this.” Dream looks up, seeing the bandits approaching almost at a running pace. “Quickly, quickly!” He urges, shooing the teenagers off into the building.
Alex and his friends look where Dream is looking and nod, fleeing in a hurry and locking the doors once they're inside. Dream sees the shutters start to flip down as the bandits get just within shouting distance. Good, they listened. Time to deal with the incoming problem. “Stop and state your business!”
The bandits slowed, and one of them motioned for the others to stop. Maybe they sensed his powerful aura. “We’re here for the kids, now hand ‘em over and you won’t get hurt.”
Dream’s expression darkens. That wasn’t the answer he was looking for. He checks the windows and finds all the shutters closed. Good, no worries about the kids seeing this. Dream summons his bow, knocking a magic arrow and pulling the string back. “I’ll ask you once to leave, and if you do it, nobody gets hurt. If you continue to try and take the children, then you make yourself my enemy. None of you will survive unless you flee.”
“Yeah right, pretty boy, as if you could-” and right there ended his sentence and his life with an arrow to the throat with deadly accuracy; he had taken another step forward. Dream wasn’t going to risk letting him or his comrades any closer.
“I don’t suggest you make the same mistake, any of you. Leave. Take your fallen if you wish, but don’t come back for the children.”
All but one were foolish enough to charge Dream.
Dream breathes a soft sigh. He hated killing, it just wasn’t a part of him, but these people… He knocks another arrow and shoots again, taking a second bandit down before cursing faintly as the third and fourth get too close for him to have time to shoot them with his bow. He trades his bow for hunting knives, raising one just in time to block an attack from one bandit as he slashes at the other one’s chest.
The bandit he had attacked still managed one more attack before Dream had to completely cut off his wielding hand to keep him from attacking again. He had still gotten a pretty bad gash to the side of his ribcage, so he'd have to heal that. He curses under his breath, dodging an attack from the last hostile party member and taking her head off with one forceful strike.
Once finished dealing with the others, he sits down, giving the remaining member of the group- who was frozen in fear- a challenging look, as if daring them to come closer. Despite the fact that they were wearing a mask, he could see their eyes widen and feel their fear overcome any other emotion they had been feeling before. They shook their head and put their hands up in surrender, their weapon clattering to the ground before they start running away as fast as they can.
Dream slumps in relief. At least he wouldn’t have to kill that one. They wouldn’t try to hurt him or the children because they had seen what he could do. “Ngh-” A sharp pain in his side reminds him of the heavily bleeding wound in his side. All he could think of was that he had promised Alex he wouldn’t get hurt. “Mr. Yellow!”
Dream's head snaps up as he hears Alex's voice, and it isn't long before the teen boy is at his side, panicking at the severity of his wound. “Alex- Alex I'm okay, look-” Dream holds a hand over the wound, a familiar golden glow appearing and beginning to mend the damaged bones. “See? Everything is okay.” A few of the other older kids and teenagers emerge from the building and see Dream covered in his own blood and others’ blood, then look around and see the bodies on the ground.
“M-Mr. Yellow…? Why did you kill them…?” One girl asks, making Dream look around as well, still continuing the healing process on his ribs. “I warned them to leave you alone. They would’ve hurt you if they had gotten their hands on you, and I wasn’t about to let that happen. I hate to kill, but you kids mean a lot to me, and these people were a serious threat to both you and I. They’re better off like this…” Dream shakes his head, then gets up off the ground, not wanting to worry the older children too much. “I need to clean up this mess…”
“Can we help?” Dream chuckles softly at the girl’s eagerness and pats her head with his clean hand. “No, Maria, I appreciate the offer, but I need to do this alone. None of you need to have blood on your hands. What you can do is get me some trash bags so I can stop them from bleeding on the grass any more than they have. I’ll ask my friend at home what I should do with them, but I could probably give them to JR since they’re likely to have been criminals anyway.”
“O-okay, we can do that!”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Star had no clue who could’ve possibly been hanging around the orphanage that could take down four bandits on their own. Four bodies had been delivered to JR, two with fatal wounds and the other two not in one piece, but all to their own bags. A note had been attached to one bag that said this, no name attached: [These four were trying to take the kids from the orphanage and all took an attempt on my life. I took an attack to the ribs, but I’m okay, and the children are safe. Thought I’d turn them in to notify you of what they’ve done and the fact that you won’t have to go looking for them. There was a fifth person, but they did not engage in combat. I let them go since they weren’t hostile. You’re welcome, Dream.]
It could be Moon. He had that thought at first. The handwriting was wrong, though. It was scarily similar to his own, but he knew it wasn’t his. He hadn’t done this. The guards who told him of the bags and the notes saw how similar it was to his writing too, but Star completely denied being involved with it. He hadn’t even heard about the children at the orphanage being in danger until the bags appeared at the doorstep of JR headquarters. It sounds like something Moon would do, especially with the ending to the note, but… Moon doesn’t go to the orphanage, and even if he did, the children there would’ve told him about it.
Who could it possibly be? Not Moon, he doesn’t visit the orphanage. It wouldn’t have been Ink, Ink would’ve told Star about it in person, probably with the bags sitting next to him. Not Blue, Blue isn’t the violent type. It wouldn’t be Cross or Error, either, because as far as Star knows, they don’t visit the orphanage either. Maybe he could ask the children. Surely they’d trust him enough to tell him the name of the man who had defended them. So off he goes to the orphanage.
“Mr. Dream!” Many of the children crowd excitedly around Star, and he’s pleased to see that none of them are harmed in the least. All of them are just as they had been the last time he had seen them. Strange, normally a child would be traumatized by witnessing multiple murders. “Hello, children, how have you been?”
“Great! Though… A couple days ago, Mr. Yellow had to protect us from some bad people. He said they would hurt us if we stayed outside, so we went inside. He took the bad people away, but he got hurt…” The children frowned and murmured amongst themselves as if they didn’t like a reminder that this “Mr. Yellow” got hurt. So it seems this person is someone they’ve gotten close with.
“No, we don’t need to worry about it, he healed himself just like he does for us when we get hurt. He’s okay. I know there was a lot of blood, but I watched him heal himself.” Healing magic? Interesting, not a common thing to have. Star himself has healing magic, but he knows for sure now that it can’t be Moon, since Moon doesn’t have healing magic. Star frowns. This was so confusing for him. Is it possible that this man is an impersonator? Or… No, multiverse crossing hasn’t ever been possible, he was sure of it. The idea was ridiculous.
“Who is he? I’ve been trying to find whoever dropped those bags at my doorstep and thank them for protecting you, but he didn’t leave a name. Could any of you tell me what he looks like?” He wasn't going to mention that he'd have to sort it out with this man that he had killed multiple people and that was… illegal. Maybe he wasn't aware of that. There were people who still weren’t aware of the fact that the multiverse has a law enforcement system.
“Oh, Mr. Yellow? We only call him that because he wears a lot of that color and it’s easier for the smaller kids. He actually looks a lot like you, same magic color and everything. He even has the same crown. He acts a lot like you, but he seems older. Like, a lot older. He doesn’t mention his name because- well, he said it was because he didn’t have a name here, but I don’t know what he means by that. Everyone has a name, duh.” One of Alex’s friends, Dasha, speaks up, telling Star what he knows of Dream.
“Hm… I’m starting to get an idea of why he might seem so strange… I think I’ll stay here until he comes back, just so I can meet him. In the meantime, how about we play hide-and-seek?” Star smiles down at the children, contemplating what he would say to this man when he gets there.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ends up it took a day and a half for Dream to show up, but he did show up. He hadn’t seen Star there, as Star was waiting in a corner out of view of the windows, so he had come in to visit the children. What he hadn’t expected was for his counterpart to be waiting there for him.
“Dream.” Dream’s gaze snaps in Star’s direction in both fear and surprise. “That’s your name, isn’t it? You aren’t from this multiverse.”
“How… I haven’t told anyone my name except-” Dream stops himself, not wanting to share that he had associated himself with Moon, “-except one person, and he doesn’t talk to you.” The children looked between the two in confusion, wanting to know why Star was calling this other man by his own name.
“Well, I was wanting to find the man who dropped a few bodies at my front door, but it ends up I only had to wait here. The children told me some things about you, so I had my suspicions.” Star clasps his hands together, observing his counterpart curiously. “So, are you aware that murder is illegal here, in this multiverse?”
“It wasn’t murder, it was self-defense. Also, I didn’t realize this multiverse had a law enforcement system. Chaos runs rampant in my multiverse, the closest thing we have to controlling it is however much Ink, Blue, and I can do to protect universes, but… often times it’s not enough. In my multiverse, Nightmare ended up turning the whole tree dark except the last golden apple, which I had in my hand, and then he ate all the apples on the tree. I had no choice but to eat the last golden apple, and even so, there was nothing I could do about what he became.” Tears well up in Dream’s eyes and he quickly averts his gaze, shaking his head and wiping away these tears. “I… I failed him… I couldn’t protect him, and I… I didn’t want to let anything bad happen to these children and fail again.”
His voice trembles and he picks at his gloves, trying to push away the memories that burned in his mind as if they had just happened. The sky turning dark, the villagers crowding around them both, Nightmare’s screams of agony as the apples transformed him, broke his original form. He would never forget that last look of betrayal on his brother’s features as the corruption overtook his body. That was what hurt him the worst, what fixed it in his mind that it was his fault it had happened.
“Dream, whatever… whatever happened to your brother after he ate the apples wasn’t your fault. It wasn’t your fault that he ate them, either. If he’s anything like my brother, he still loves you underneath the corruption.” Star tries reassuring Dream, getting up from where he’s sitting and walking closer.
“Mr. Yellow? What happened to your brother…?” Alex takes a step towards them, wondering what had happened other than death that could make Dream so emotional. He had never seen Dream cry before, so to him, it must have been something major. Something about dark apples, golden apples, and corruption. He didn’t quite understand.
“He… He met a fate worse than death. He tried to do something out of jealousy that was meant to be my job, and my whole multiverse fell apart because of it. It was already bad enough with my multiverse’s Error destroying universes, but with the balance of good emotions and bad emotions thrown off, a nearby village went after him. He ate the dark apples out of fear, trying to protect himself because it was him and I against a whole village. He…” Dream’s voice cracks for a moment, but he takes a deep breath to recompose himself, getting quieter. “His body was destroyed and reformed into something dark and corrupted, the kind of abomination you find in fantasy books. At that point, everything of his old self was buried under a new, horrible person that I didn’t know. I was… I was trapped in stone for quite a while, all I could do was sit and count the years inside my mind, stuck like a statue. My home universe was destroyed by my brother, so I had to leave once I escaped the stone.”
“Wait, how… How old are you?” Star had begun to think that Dasha was right about Dream, that he was older. So much had happened to him, and he just sounded… tired. So tired, as if he had lived many lives to get to where he is.
“Just three years over five hundred,” Dream answers, glad to have shifted away from the topic of his traumatic past. “It has been… a very long life, but never did I think I’d end up in another multiverse. I’m glad to see that you take care of the children, but I don’t approve of how you treat Nightmare. He never did anything wrong, and you know it.” Dream gives Star a scolding look, seeing his counterpart’s expression turn cold.
“That’s none of your business. You don’t know him, you don’t know whether he’s done anything wrong or not. Did your Nightmare not wrong you? Five hundred years, and you don’t think a different multiverse’s version of your brother wouldn’t have done something wrong?” Star didn’t want to admit that Dream was right. Moon hadn’t done anything to deserve the hell that Star had put him through, but he wouldn’t admit that in front of the children and have a stranger from a foreign place look like he knew better. Dream was older, so it was natural that he’d know better, but Star was the leader of JR. To the kids, he automatically knew better than anyone else what’s wrong and right.
“I actually do know your multiverse’s Nightmare. Say what you will, but I deem him innocent. I cherish him as you should. Just take some time to think about it. Try and mend your relationship with him before you no longer can.” Dream’s voice had taken on a serious tone as well, his expression one of cold disapproval. “Good day, I’ll tell Night I saw you.”
