This booklet advertises McCall’s dressmaking patterns. McCall’s had started to produced printed patterns in 1920, and by 1923 these were being promoted in New Zealand department stores with one “Betty McCall” on hand instore to promote them.

Look What We Sell! The Butterick Vintage Style ‘Patterns by Gertie‘ Sewing Patterns By Gretchen Hirsch
If you are a fan of Vintage style clothing then you will love the ‘Patterns by Gertie’ sewing pattern collection from Butterick.
We have 7 sewing patterns available in this line and they are all designed by Gretchen Hirsch (aka ‘Gertie’) who is a sewing blogger, sewing book author and sewing teacher. She loves retro style clothing and that was the inspiration for her starting her blog ‘Gertie’s Blog For Better Sewing’. She then became very popular (Not surprising at all....she has the most fantastic sense of style in her sewing!) and she then started to write dressmaking books and to teach others to sew.
Back in late 2012 the pattern line was launched by Butterick and the rest, as they say, is history!

Patterns By Gertie Butterick B5814 - draped wiggle dress with tiny raglan sleeves, a surplice boned bodice and a double drape on the sarong-style skirt. Available in sizes 6-14 and 14-22 . You can read about the dress in this blog post by Gretchen.
Patterns By Gertie Butterick 6031 - Patterns for an entire lingerie set with slip, camisole in 2 lengths, and panties. Inspired by vintage lingerie but made in modern stretch fabrics. Available in sizes 6-14 and 14-22. In this blog post by Gretchen you can read how to convert the pattern into a bralette plus in this post she shows you how to sew the panties.
Patterns By Gertie Butterick B5824 - This coat has a dramatic shawl collar, slim kimono sleeves, and a gored circle skirt. Available in sizes 6-14 and 14-22. Gretchen did a sew-along that showed you how to make this coat. You can see all the posts here.
Patterns By Gertie Butterick B5882 - A flirty 50s style dress. The dress has a vintage design element of a "shelf bust" and the "shelf" is a pleated bust inset that is framed by a bias strap. The bodice is steel boned and has a waist stay for support. The skirt is a 3/4 circle with gores at the princess lines. Available in sizes 4-12 and 12-20. There are a couple of blog post about this pattern on Gretchen’s blog. This one tells you how to do a FBA (Full Bust Adjustment) and in this post you get to see some details about the dress pattern.
Patterns By Gertie Butterick B5895 -This pattern is for casual separates. The shirt has kimono sleeves, a wing collar, and a tie waist. The jeans are capri length, have side pockets , a back zipper, and contrast top stitching. Available in sizes 4-12 and 12-20. You can read Gretchen’s blog post about this pattern here.
Patterns By Gertie Butterick 6019 - This stunning dress can be made in two versions. A full-skirted version or a sarong version . It has shirring in the back panels, a lapped center back zipper. a bias band across the boned bodice, structured bra cups and a removable halter strap. Available in sizes 4-12 and 12-20. You can see the 6019 dress that Gretchen made for herself in this blog post.
Patterns By Gertie Butterick 6067 - This is a one-piece '50s-inspired swimsuit. It has a modesty panel (kind of like a little skirt), ruching at the sides and at the bustline. This has separate cup sizes included. The bust is reinforced with polylaminate foam for structure and there is boning in the side seams. Available in sizes 6-14 and 14-22. PLEASE TAKE NOTE-----> THIS IS HOW YOU MEASURE YOURSELF FOR THE PATTERNS!! The following pages are taken from "The American System of Dressmaking" 1909 EDITION. There are several editions of this amazing manual, but I have pulled their detailed yet simply explained directions from their 1909 edition here (because this edition online is available in actual book form and easier for me to sift through). These directions are for: Torso, Skirt, and Sleeves. Again, these are from 1909, so they will be best applied ver batum to all patterns from about 1900-1914 in my opinion. HOWEVER: I consider this a very workable and standard base to create all measurements from nearly any era from. Some tips for other decades: 1880s and early 1890s bodices should have the tape measure pulled TIGHTER around the bust and sleeves as opposed to what's listed here. For the 1920s, obviously, waist measure should be roughly the same as the bust/hip measurement on cylindrical dresses. Each edition is slightly different- some things are further explained, some drawings turn into photographs the newer the editions get, and one of them is a rather huge expanded edition with virtually everything included but in something of a random order. If you are die-hard on making sure you have all the information they offer, I would suggest saving all editions, reading through them, and trying to compile an all-inclusive volume for you to use from all of them- clicking on each title will give you the year of the volume. I've gone through a lot of dressmaking manuals on this website (and they do have a lot- have some fun and play around with the search feature and see what you can find!), but this one is hands down the best in my opinion: They start you from scratch expecting you to have NO teacher, NO experience, and have how to do all the stitches, step by step drafting, etc. "The American System of Dressmaking" is probably the best title available for learning how to do this sort of thing. I think if you can master everything they ever published, you can navigate less detailed manuals from other eras with fairly good confidence. The book itself claims that if you can master it, you should be able to look at any fashion plate published and replicate it yourself without a pattern. So there you go, ladies! ***GUYS, if you would like a custom manual on how to make gentlemen's clothing, they do exist but generally in the form of tailor's manuals and periodicals that may not be very specific as men did not make their own clothing and hired schooled and apprenticed tailors to do it instead. So by all means, please check out what you can find on the Internet Archive website if you're interested in making your own items! :) I hope this helps, you guys!! Even though this manual has a very mathematic system for drafting patterns, even *I* can follow along and have successfully made drafts from it. So, if you decide to download the whole book(s), don't let it overwhelm you! You can do it!! :D Just take it one step at a time.
