Catching Up with Comedian Drew Wayne
One of the winners of the May 28th Broken Bottle Open Mic. Drew Wayne is a very respected Albuquerque comic. A veteran who's not afraid to push the boundaries. Whether it's self deprecating humor or punchy one-liners. Drew Wayne is smart, dedicated, and someone we all have to keep an eye out for.
I’m Drew Wayne, not actually it’s a fake name, a 28-year-old comedian/actor/host out of Albuquerque, NM. I like to tell jokes that are geeky/sometimes offensive/but mostly Netflix all over the Great American Southwest. Outside of comedy, he fills his time as an indy wrestler, Geeks Who Drink Quizmaster, and hot sauce sauceteer. Not to mention one time at a party he made Joss Whedon laugh (wicked awesome!).
How Long Have You Been Doing Stand Up?
I first got up on stage 10 years ago and after a few horrible outings I went into hiding. I did some improv comedy, acting, and ‘poetry’ but found my way back to stand-up and have been performing consistently for the last 4-years.
Who Are The Comedians That You Look Up To?
First comedian I ever liked was D.L. Hughley, he honestly made me want to tell jokes. After that I was inspired by Mitch Hedberg, Chris Rock, and Patton Oswalt. Today I love hearing anything out of the mouths of Bill Burr, Maria Bamford, Jim Gaffigan, Kyle Kinane, Arj Barker, and Jason Green.
Tell Me About The Shows You’re Doing In The Next Couple Of Months
Power Hour the first Thursday of every month is my favorite show to produce and be apart of, Genevieve Mueller and I have got something good going with this one and I love to see local and traveling comics try and step up to the plate. Also Monday Night Open Mic at Back Alley Brewery is going strong and I aim to keep that rolling right along.
Where’s Your Favorite Venue To Perform/Put On Shows?
Any place that doesn’t have a TV on… I cant’t compete with Sportscenter’s Top Ten.
What Do You Think The Comedy Scene In Town Needs For It To Take Off/Flourish?
Who Are Local Comedians To Look Out For?
All of them. After a show. On the road. JK. Real Answer: they all have different voices go find one that speaks to you.
What Is Your Pre-Show Process (Set List Creation, How Do You Get Psyched, Ect.)?
Drink less than two beers and get a feel for the crowd.
Go out and see some shows! Open mics are cool, but the only way to make the scene grow is if comics bring their friends to shows, not practice, and for them to bring their A-game when it counts. We (comics, hosts, producers) need to treat shows with more respect and I believe the audience will respond in kind.
