FLASHBack: Week 70 - Penguin Calls

This week on FLASHBack, we're taking a short look at a set of animations by Drew "drewmo" Mokris, a man who among other things, helped to embed the majestic narwhal into internet culture, with a Flash game on his personal website, www.spinnerdisc.com. But on FLASHBack, we're here to talk about animations, not games, and so instead we're going to look at drewmo's series, Penguin Calls. The first Penguin Calls animation was posted on 03 January 2005 on drewmo's spinnerdisc website, and was later also posted to Albino Blacksheep on January 6th (possibily the 7th). Like many viral Flash animations of the era, the concept was dead simple: Drew simply saved any funny voicemail messages he got from his college friends or his relatives, and then did cartoony animations of penguins to act out each call. (And yes, he does sneak in a narwhal in with all those penguins.)

  In an update to Albino Blacksheep on 07 February 2005, it was announced that drewmo had "joined [their] animating team". Then on 18 March 2005, Penguin Calls 2 was added to ABS. By this point, drewmo's Flash games and animations were popular enough, he was having t-shirts made for his spinnerdisc website, making him another early Flash artist to give merchandising a go. The third installment would take a bit longer; Penguin Calls 3 would go up on 01 January 2007. As this one has a much higher percentage of calls from Drew's family, combined with the fact that it took so much longer to come out, I suspect that word of the first two penguin calls may have gotten out, and several of his friends told him they weren't ok with being penguinized (Or just stopped leaving messages).   Also in 2007, Drew began drawing for the webcomic Left-Handed Toons (By Right-Handed People) and there were no further Penguin Calls posted to ABS after that. However, on 29 November 2009, Mokris uploaded to his personal YouTube channel an animation he'd made for his girlfriend's birthday giving one of her voicemails the Penguin Calls treatment, marking the series' only entry to deal with smartphones instead of flip phones.   That's it for this week's FLASHBack entry.
