Ooooh god, headcannon and au time. I'm just buzzing here with this Drift Punk idea and I had to wait a couple of hours until I had my hands on a laptop. So this is based on this post.

It's killing me because Guy-Manuel and Thomas are really long term childhood friends so can you just picture Hermann and Newt somehow growing up in grade school together. They'd be terrible to each other, picking on one another for verbal fights since neither one would do anything physical to the other. 

It just goes on for years that they become really close friends. Then K-Day finally hits and they both know they have to do their part. Hermann starts working on the code for the Mark I jaegers while Newt manages to do this part by actually helping design and building the jaegers. 

When it finally comes time for test pilots and they discover the need for two pilots, Newt just jumps for the opportunity, already made designs for their suits which would need to be flashy and modified the clunky machinery so it would take pressure of Hermann's bad leg. 

I just can't.  It sounds wonderful and they beat up kaiju together only because they know that they have a strong link and feel obligated to help and then go back to bickering with one another when they're not in each other's heads. They prefer to work in the lab to get others off the ground with real pilots once others who actually know how to work the interface come along. 

They'd retire the suits once they finally got things settled on the ground. Newt would totes wear his helmet in the lab just to play around with the different settings he had on it just to bother Hermann. It was fun and games for a while before things turned south and Pentecost had to refuse to let them back out in the force when jaegers started falling because their minds were needed in figuring the next kaiju attack and how to stop them. 

I'm sorry I just love this idea someone with better ficification abilities should totes write something for this~
