Crisis of Conscience
My good friend regularly flies in crawfish to his home and busts out a 60 QT fryer on puts it on his front walkway. He lives across from a very gentrified neighborhood park, and a gang gets together and we drink, play music and get rowdy and flag people down walking by if their dog is especially cute and offer them beers for pets.
Looking at those poor creatures struggling for life, I couldn’t help but feel bad that I was about to eat them. As a measure to guard against my guilt, I took the feistiest one, and released him into the pond. Traversing the park with him in my hand, he menacingly flicked his tail at me to strike me off of him. That only made me feel worse. He did not want to die. I don’t think anyone does--right? Oh wait, some people do. The only animal that does this btw. And we have no predators other than other humans. When I put it that way, we are the most vile creatures on this planet.
I read once that if our cats were bigger than us that they would not think twice about killing us and eating us. During my struggle to believe this, I think of two things; the Siegfried & Roy show and the now dead baby bunny my cats, I have five of them, brought to me the other day. Cats however, are obligatory carnivores. They will actually die if they don’t eat other animals.
Eating animals for humans is a choice I understand but there is a lot to be said for both the benefits of some animal proteins being in your diet. It is so very hard to say what is right and what is wrong. But I will give it a shot.
At the very least, I believe we should all be pegan or what I used to call orthoarian before this paleo + vegan term was coined. Being vegan is the highest moral ground no doubt, but difficult for most. Please, in the very least, start here; for the animals, for planet, for your health.
April Mission Five- There is no reason not to think of food as medicine. You want to get healthy and be active and look and feel good? Of course you do! The only way to do that, is to be critical and discerning about everything you put into this marvelous machine you posses. And I am not talking about your iPhone dummy. For more about what the heck a pegan is, check out Dr. Hyman tell it.
