Six of the Top Ten Overall at the USCA Gateway Event are Detroit Speed Equipped
Mooresville, NC - http://goo.gl/0k8nlS The Ultimate Street Car Association took over the Gateway Motorsports Park July 19th -20th for some high intensity action on the autocross and road course.
The weekend started out with a driver's meeting and segment instructions followed by the design & engineering judging. The speed stop challenge and autocross began right around lunch and ran non-stop all day until 5:00 PM. If you are looking to get some real track time at an event, the USCA is the place to come. Over 1,000 laps were run just on Saturday alone! Kyle, driving the DSE 1970 Camaro Test Car was just nudged out of the top spot in the over 3000lb. class by Danny Popp by under .500 of a second. DSE engineer, Ryan Mathews, also ran hard in the over 3000lb. class by finishing in 6th place. Stacy Tucker ran hard all day in the DSE 1966 Mustang Test Car but unfortunately was able to crack the top 10 in this very deep and competitive class. Karl Dunn put in a fantastic time of 0:37.617 (one of only two times sub :38 all weekend) in the under 3000lb. class in his DSE "Equipped" 1968 Camaro and claimed the autocross top spot. We would also like to mention that Detroit Speed friend, Billy Utley, finished right behind Ryan Mathews in his DSE "Equipped" 1972 Nova in 7th place on the autocross. While the autocross was going on, the speed stop challenge was also in full gear. Once again it was Danny Popp barely eclipsing the time of Detroit Speed's own Kyle Tucker to the top spot with a time of 0:12.831 to Kyle's 0:13.231.
Following a full day of autocross racing and the speed stop challenge was the Detroit Speed Road Rally that led to the Holley welcome party at Gateway Classics and a much anticipated home cooked meal compliments of the unofficial USCA chef, Albert Melchoir. There was another occasion to celebrate Saturday, Detroit Speed friend Sam Farrington turned 18 and ran in his first official USCA event to a great finish! Congrats Sam!
The next morning came quickly and started out with another driver's meeting followed by Lead/Follow laps at the Gateway road course. Everyone was looking forward to some road racing action compliments of BFG and the BFGoodrich Hot Lap Challenge. Cars were running all morning before a quick break for lunch and then action resumed until 4:30 in the afternoon. Once again it was Danny Popp who took the top time and swept the events at Gateway earning him a trip to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Challenge at the end of the year in Pahrump, NV after the SEMA show. Ryan Mathews ran had for DSE in the 2012 "White Monster" Camaro and finished in 3rd place while Kyle ended up in 5th place in the 1970 Camaro Test Car.
Congratulations to Bryan Johnson for winning the Detroit Speed Fastest 5th Gen Award and to Billy Utley for winning the Detroit Speed Fastest American Iron Pre-1980 Award in their fully DSE "Equipped" rides. We would also like to congratulate Rodney Prouty who received the Spirit of the Event award and a trip to the Optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational.
Detroit Speed was also pleased that six out of the top ten overall finishers were Detroit Speed "Equipped." Kyle finished 2nd overall in his DSE 1970 Camaro Test Car while Bryan Johnson finished 3rd in his 2012 DSE "Equipped" Camaro. DSE engineer, Ryan Mathews, finished in 5th place in the DSE 2012 "White Monster" while DSE "Equipped" drivers Billy Utley, Ken Thwaits, and Richard Gregory finished 7th, 8th, and 9th respectively.
This was another fun and fantastic event put on by the USCA. We enjoy the competition and love to see the fields get deeper and deeper every event. It's great to see someone who just started out a few events ago start putting up great numbers as their confidence and excitement grow. Next up for the USCA is the Portland, OR event August 1st-2nd at Portland International Raceway.
