today i need to go into work an hour early to make sure the manager doesn’t fuck up $400 in orders that we absolutely, positively must get out the door before 1pm because we’re essentially catering a “rich folks with kids” lunch, and if that doesn’t scream business to you, you don’t work anywhere near a pizza place.

It’s one of those days where I feel bad about complaining.  Work was decent: great weather, good money, solid business, and I’m cruising for a few hours of OT this week.  All around not bad... but I’m gonna complain anyways.

I rock on up to the second delivery of a quick double.  Last one was quick, good tip, so I’m in a happy mood.  Second order’s nothing much -- single-serving pizza, garlic bread, a soda, so it’s not even $20, but hey, they drop even like $2-3 on the tip, I’m rolling back with more than a tenner in my pocket, so good times.

Ring the bell, teenage son and mom answer the door.  There’s always a quick song and dance here -- “hi/hey/good evening/how’re you/signature and whatnot on here”.  I hand the receipt to mom, and the kid holds out something green.  “Here’s your tip.”

I take it, do the quick pinch-rub.  Yeah, a single.  $1.  Faaaaantastic.  “Oh, he’ll take care of you next time,” Mom adds, while she figures out how to write 0 on the tip line and sign.

Lady, I know you folks.  I’ve been here before.  “Next time” is in three months, you’ll have completely forgotten, and my rent is due in two weeks.  Next time isn’t worth shit.

“This was kinda last minute,” she continues as I realize I’m doing the ‘are you people for real?’ face.  I probably inserted some “uh-huh”s in there.  Maybe an “okay.”

The only thing I could really muster up was a hearty “My pen?”  I bring a pen with me to the door.  About half the time people forget about it.  If you’re giving me a shitty to no tip, I am definitely not forgetting about it.  I appended a “Thanks” as she handed it back.

I am not proud, but there was something about that entire exchange that got under my skin.  If you’re going to be an asshole tipper, don’t feel the need to explain yourself.  It’s better that way.
