Thor looked out his second floor window of the Avengers Mansion. He had once again returned to Midgard, this time to aid his new friends, and inspect what they believed – but he did not – to be a new Tesseract. The Asgardians had harnessed some of its power, allowing them to travel between the realms without the Bifrost. Thor knew it was simply a matter of time before the whispers started in S.H.I.E.L.D. between those who would wish to use the Tesseract’s power as a weapon. While Thor knew that his teammates trusted him, he knew that many members of S.H.I.E.L.D. did not share their faith. Not the least, Thor suspected, was the new commander, Maria Hill. Thor had wondered at the ingratitude of people whose lives he had saved – but he did realize that to them, he was a force inherently associated with his brother. Which was not, he mused, wholly inaccurate. Thor had a long history with his brother, but to the rest of Midgard, Loki was an alien force who had tried to subjugate the planet, unleashing terror upon one of its most populated cities. A laughing, sneering, manipulative, evil -
Wincing, Thor pushed the thought from his mind. He did not want to remember his brother in this way. In fact, he had difficulty thinking of his brother at all. Loki deserved the punishment that the All-Father had bestowed, Thor knew that, but he still could not help but feel that it was cruel. But he had seen the change that had come over his brother. He still wondered how much of what had happened had been his fault…
The sound of voices in the hallway brought Thor back from his reverie. As much as he missed his friends in Asgard, Thor was part of a new team. The Avengers. Slowly, they were helping him to make a second home on Midgard. But even more help than them was Jane. Thor smiled. She always reminded him why this realm was worth fighting for. He had seen too little of Jane since he had been here, as S.H.I.E.L.D. had kept them both busy on separate assignments. Their few attempts to see each other privately had been interrupted or cancelled due to one or the other’s obligations. Thor promised himself that this would not happen today.
Preparing to leave, Thor walked past the small mirror in his chamber. While S.H.I.E.L.D. had provided him with Midgardian clothing, he still did not feel comfortable in it, and chose instead to wear his own Asgardian garb. He had grown used to the looks and stares he received from the mortals, and suspected that they would not cease, even if he were dressed like them. They would always sense something about him that was alien. Midgardians could be bizarrely perceptive – and intelligent. Jane was proof of that. And she liked his regular clothes. Besides, today was about getting away from crowds mortals and their judgement, as well as his discomfort with their customs and etiquette that he felt far from ever understanding.
As he turned to leave, Thor glanced at Mjolnir, left on the small table in the corner of his room. He knew that Jane would not approve of his bringing a weapon on what she referred to as a “date.” Asgardian women would never have such qualms – they would have encouraged him to bring weapons – but being so different from the women he knew was part of Jane’s allure for Thor. He knew that none of the mortals could lift his hammer, so he believed it would be perfectly safe.
Thor walked out of his room with his standard confident swagger, but paused to take a deep breath. In his gut, he felt that today would be important for reasons he could not foresee. Once outside, he stood in front of the Mansion’s main gate, waited for Jane, and hoped that his excitement did not show too much on his face.
