Original Game: The Suffering In the early age of steam, Dr. Richard Wells was given the nickname 'Dr. Killjoy' after he performed an experimental procedure on a particularly manic psychiatric patient. He ended up turning a perpetually laughing lunatic into an almost catatonic individual, but at the time this was regarded as a massive triumph in medical science and earned him a place in Carnate Island Prison as the resident doctor. He soon founded the Carnate Institution for the Alienated, apparently an on-site treatment facility. It's real purpose was rather different. The theatrical Killjoy had some extremely...unorthodox approaches to his study of psychiatry. He became completely fascinated with the story of Alice Liddell and the legends of Silent Hill, becoming convinced that he could patent a form of therapy wherein he could create physical manifestations of his patients' fears and insecurities and have them battle. Believing himself on the cusp of revolutionizing psychiatry, he used the prison inmates as experimental subjects for some truly disturbing experiments. Before the authorities learned of the true nature of his experiments, he was brought in to oversee the execution of Horace Gauge, the last man to be executed via the electric chair. The reason he was the last one was because, according to Richard at least, Horace's spirit somehow became connected to the electric current, enabling him to escape his body and murder the man who'd accused him of the murder. Despite Dr. Killjoy's increasingly evident insanity and attempts to stop the rumour mill, the theory that spirits could attach themselves to energy coursing through them at the moment of death spread far and wide, ending the use of the electric chair. During the ensuing scandal, Killjoy's experiments were discovered. Before he could be properly brought to justice, the good doctor simply vanished. Until he recently appeared, requesting to study the monsters of Silent Hill and offering his services to Alice and Alessa. Alice's bad history with psychiatrists prevented him from joining her suit, but Alessa was more interested in what Dr. Killjoy had to say...
