why are there so few DROD fans

I mean the real answer is “a lot of reasons”

the gameplay setting and story are all really fun but none of them have a great hook for an elevator pitch

especially in King Dugan’s Dungeon, the game has a tendency to cross the line from “challenging” to “unforgiving,” though JtRH added UI elements that helped a lot with that (serpents, red doors, and complex orb puzzles in particular)

the art and sound direction is charming but definitely... not to everyone’s tastes

just the nature of starting out as a cult favorite shareware title in the mid-90s and relying on word of mouth to grow its audience over the following decades

That said, DROD kicks ass and I think about it a couple of times a month. I went looking for my JtRH CD a couple months back and you convinced me to go pick up DROD: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder on Steam because I never got around to playing TCB. When DROD hits, it hits so good. Solving well-designed DROD puzzles make you feel like a genius.
