He was ashamed, that night, when the door to Drosselmeyer’s house opened, and he began to sob. Ashamed when they wrapped arms around his back and allowed him to rest his head upon their shoulder, tall frame bent low. They were kind to him in that moment. Kind enough to coo at him, encourage him, drink to “make up for the lost fluids”, and guide him to bed. Kind enough to lay with him, stroke his hair, and guide him to sleep against them, soft voice humming one of their favorite pieces from a long-dead composer into his ear.

Up to Episode 02 of Princess Tutu, Some Miscellaneous Thoughts

*My first attempt to watch Tutu was dubbed, so it’s interesting noting the differences with the subs, like how they leave her name as ‘Ahiru’ even though that literally just means ‘duck’ (I wonder why that was changed for the dub). The voice Ahiru’s seiyu adopts for her sounds surprisingly creaky, but that’s actually pretty fitting for how a real duck might sound if they could use human language.

*Drosselmeyer is just as creepy as I remember him. I wonder if his trick of appearing in silhouettes and speaking from them was at least partially inspired by Itoh’s and Sato’s earlier work with Sailor Moon, particularly that scene with Jadeite addressing a minion through a pile of televisions.

*I can’t believe I forgot about Anteaterina. Reminds me that one of the things I enjoyed about this show was how it was willing to show all sorts of different and unusual characters performing ballet.

*I also forgot the show established very early on that Rue was friendly to Ahiru, and that the two even danced together, which will make their later conflict all the more bitter.

*I like that Ahiru can, technically, transform between duck and human at will, but it’s conditional, just like in a lot of classic fairy tales. While it’s awkward for her now, iirc she later learns how to use her condition to her advantage.

*I know Ahiru only has the best of intentions, but maaaybe she shouldn’t have started rebuilding Mytho’s heart with ‘bitter disappointment’. Still, I like how this show grapples with feelings in a very literal sense, and how even negative feelings are a necessary part of someone’s heart.

*Random non-sequitur, but if Ahiru and Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist ever met, and he learned about her amulet and shapeshifting, he would be *absolutely* convinced that she’s a chimera using a philosopher’s stone, and for some reason that’s very amusing to me.

Drosselmeyer - i really did not expect that somebody would ask about him, but it`s actually a great thought! 

How I feel about this character

He`s great. A very distinct personality,sort of mischievous, scheming and also dominant. He really is both hilarious and terrifying at the same time, and there`s a lot of balance to his character and his entire role in the story.

All the people I ship romantically with this character

Boy that`s a hard one. But I do have a headcanon where the Tutu from the story (the Tutu-character that Ahiru possesses) is actually based on a real person - the woman Drosselmeyer loved, who died too early, making Drosselmeyer bitter and tragedy-oriented. 

My non-romantic OTP for this character

Um... The master/rebellious slave relationships with Edel?... And the grumpy granddad/fidgety grandchild relationship with Uzura

My unpopular opinion about this character

I`m not sure about the popularity of the opinion, but i sort of think that he planned his own failure in the anime. He is a writer - and if look closer, it seems like he is a good one, because he accomplishes what any writer should focus on the most - character development. His characters grow and change through out the story, and his failure and the way he is being defeated is the biggest development jump for the heroes, so it`s natural for me to think that it all was planned to teach them (and the possible reader=watcher of the show) a lesson. (i`m not sure if i explained it well enough, sorry) 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.

His interaction with the story characters. Not Ahiru as Tutu, but actual Tutu, not Fakir as Lohengrin, but Lohengrin himself etc.

Rue

How I feel about this character I didn`t really like her at first, but then I realized a can relate to her a lot. And now i feel warm affection towards her. 

All the people I ship romantically with this character Ruetho warms my heart, especially the Ruetho @trixystix does) Their love is just so... aaaaaaaawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww And yeah, i do think Rue deserves happiness after all she went through And i do ship Autor/Rue (Autorue?...that sounds weird) in the sort of bittersweet onesided way.

My non-romantic OTP for this character Her friendship with Ahiru is great, it adds so much more to Rue`s character, making her much more human and sympathetic

My unpopular opinion about this character Her and Mytho are not probably gonna have kids, or at least they won`t be the most caring and attentive parents - they love each other so much that three`s always a croud to them. 

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon. SHOWING HER FREAKING CASUAL CLOTHES I mean it Even Mytho had his goddamn pantsless white shirt, even Pique and Lilie got something out of school uniform, even MR. FREAKING CAT And she got nothing What a shame!
