Medium-Large Shop Must Have
Depending on your situation, a drum sander can either be a luxury or a necessity. A beginner woodworker certainly doesn’t need a drum sander but as they get more and more experienced, the drum sander brings precision and efficiency to the shop that some may require. An experienced woodworker and a cabinet shop must have a drum sander. It saves time, the results are fantastic, and it is safer.
Drum sanders can be used to dimension lumber to specific size with course grit paper or with fine sandpaper installed, a baby butt smooth finish can be achieved. Various different drums can be purchased for various drum sanders on the market today. These different drums are for unique applications such as: metal, contour sanding, distressing, etc.
An experienced woodworker can manufacture their product with a drum sander capabilities in mind. When sizing parts, they can leave a specific amount (typically 1/16″ or 1/32″) and remove it on the drum sander. This produces a surface finish that is nearly ready for finish and it also brings the parts to final thickness.

To keep a long story short, my brother-in-law came about a large quantity of rustic cedar beams. His desire was to turn those beams into rustic cedar. With my woodworking shop moving into his farm shop, this dream could become a reality.
With thousands of linear feet of cedar to process, we knew my older sander was due for an upgrade. We decided to go with a dual drum sander due to the capabilities and features it offered.

With doing some research online for the ideal sander. We kept going back to SuperMax brand. They are well known for their quality products and long known reputation. When looking within their product lineup, we decided to go with a dual drum sander.
Dual drum sanders obviously have two drums that can have different grits of sandpaper on each drum. This allows a bunch of opportunities, especially with the second drum being able to be raised or lowered.
Delivery and Assembly
We purchased the sander from ACME TOOLS and when it was delivered via lift gate truck from their Grandforks, ND warehouse the excitement started to build.
The sander was packaged very well and there wasn’t much to assemble. The lid and handle needed to be screwed on. This can easily be handled along but getting the unit off the pallet was a multi person job.
Casters
This unit doesn’t come with casters but you can purchase casters for the unit. We failed to realize that and just mounted a few casters we had in the shop. Due to the style of those casters, we had to mount a block to the bottom of the legs of the drum sander.
Casters for us are a must. We rely on being able to move the unit 3 feet or so each time we need a significant in-feed and out-feed needs.

Dual Drums
This sander has two drums. It comes with a chart under the dust hood that shows the sandpaper combinations and also the recommended setting for the second drum. There are two knobs that allow you to adjust the second drum up and down. This allows you to use it in conjunction with the first drum or raise it up and remove it from the operation. Or on the contrary, you can lower it and use it solo. This allows the user so many options when needing to sand their material.
Intellisand Technology
The abrasive conveyor is powered by a direct drive D.C. motor that provides 100 in. lb. of torque to bring your material through the sander. The conveyor has a speed range of 0-15 FPM (feet per minute).
If by change you have your conveyor speed set too fast or your depth of cut set to deep, the Intellisand Technology will kick in. It automatically regulates the speed of the conveyor to prevent burning, gouging, and get a nice consistent finish through the entire length of your board.
Optional Accessories
There are a few accessories that are available for the 25 x 2 model. There is a sandpaper storage rack that goes on the stand next to the motor. We didn’t purchase this accessory as we have made our own shop-made storage in the past.
We did purchase the in-feed and out-feed tables. In our opinion, these are a must! Especially if you are working with larger and longer stock. They are easy to install and level and provide nice support for larger material. It is also nice to have those extra seconds when working with smaller stock too!
Dust Collection
It is very important to remove the sanding dust during operation. First, it is not good to breath wood dust. Second, it can clog up the roller, abrasive table, and the life of your abrasives will decrease rapidly.
SuperMax recommends 1,100 CFM (cubic feet per minute) of vacuum on the sander. And they recommend doing this through two dedicated 4″ lines and not one dedicated lines with a wye at the end.
We have a Clearvue CV1800 that is on the opposite end of our dust collection piping system and it has no problem collecting the dust. It is a 5 HP dust collector.

No matter where you are in your woodworking skills, a drum sander brings convince, safety, consistent results, and efficiency to your shop.
The SuperMax 25×2 drum sander was no exception. With the 5HP motor and the dual drums, the sander was able to take significantly deep passes with ease.
In our opinion, casters are a must in our shop but if you have a dedicated space with built-in in-feed and out-feed room, then casters may not be needed for you.
