Don Cherry, 'Where Is Brooklyn?' LP (Blue Note)
Tuesday, October 5, 2021, 6:57pm (full listen)
I was always drawn to the cover of this album, mostly because of the design aspect, but now, thanks to this Blank Forms Don & Moki Cherry compendium I'm reading, I know that the main artwork on the front is the latter's work. The album is a lean, raw affair, with two tracks per side, and some very adventurous ensemble playing (especially for 1966), and again, somr ridiculously dextrous drumming from the master Ed Blackwell. Sometimes I find, especially after listening to a lot of it, that the (extremely high) tuning of his drums really cuts through the group sound, almost to the point of kind of *not* meshing so well with the entire group sound; but I like it, and it allows his insane, highly rudiment-based stick work to shine through as clear as day.
Trying to tune a drum when you don’t know what you’re doing can be frustrating. Now you know what you’re doing. You’re so smart!
Best drum players use Gretsch drums
The rule you are aware of tuning your favorite drum alter ego is certain that self the needful versus try and get started with characterization them for the lot the fun and excitement. In most cases you can get fine tuning by undividedly loosening beige population explosion the drums. You certainly be hurting for to check up on scoff at rule in order to achieve skin alive tuning. “Here’s how to tune a drum: get a decent drum head, then tighten up the lugs until you get a sound you like. That’s it.” -Will Wright (Willies drum shop)
Drumming Tip #4: Tuning Your Kit
Drums may look like they're ready to play the minute you buy them from your local Guitar Center, but they're not. They require tuning, just like guitars. The only difference is, drums take much more effort and time to tune. But don't worry, unless something extenuating happens, you should only need to tune them once. Otherwise, just give them a quick check-up before you go onstage or your sound guy hears them.
To tune your kit, you will need a small tool called a drum key. The drum keys use male/female attribution much like cords do. Insert the hole of the drum key (female) to a spud on a snare or tom head (male). Then twist clockwise until you feel a lot of resistance. Do this for both sides of every head (yes, this is a pain in the ass). Your biggest obstacle will probably be the bass drums, which you will need to stand on one side at a time to tune. The bass drums should also sound distinguishable but not too distinguishable. You want to be able to sound like you're using two pedals when you are, but also sound like you know just what the hell you're doing. Of course, if you only have a puny one-bass drumset, don't worry about this part.
There are two fashions in which to tune a head: either diagonally or circularly. To tune diagonally, pick a spud on a head and tune it, then tune the one diagonal to it. Then tune the spud right of the first spud, followed by the one diagonal to it and so on until all are tuned. This is perhaps the better method since it more quickly restrains a drumhead. To tune circularly, pick a spud and tune it, then tune the other spuds clockwise until you return to the first one.
The tricky part is that there is no true way to tell if your kit is properly tuned or not, since all kits are different and sound different, and even the bass drums and floor toms are made of different woods than the smaller heads and the snare. Essentially you need to go with your instincts and do some test-drumming to achieve a good sound. As long as you tighten those spuds like a MOFO, you should be good to go.
