We had a packed house last night for the Drum Brothers’ “Intro to Sound and Rhythm” workshop. Each year, as part of the Mindful Unplug retreat, Matthew Marsolek and family—his wife Tracy and sons Ravi and Nyon—distribute 30+ handmade drums and teach us all how to find that deep, primal music within. The rhythm that begins with our heartbeats, the movement of energy that expresses itself through the unique sound and song that only you can make. Your call. Your voice. Your howl. Matthew can bring together a group of people, most of whom have never touched a drum before, and masterfully create a safe and inviting environment where creativity and joy thrives and honesty and vulnerability lead the way there. By the end of two hours, the group is playing synchronized beats on their borrowed instruments, harmonizing and freestyling, and smiling until the muscles in their faces cramp up. Drum circles with the Drum Brothers are always a highlight of the summer for guests and staff, a way to celebrate and re-member who we are and why we’re here.
