Are you delighted delighted? Or confused delighted?
"...delight lies somewhere between boredom and confusion." I am delighted, but more on the confused side of delighted.
Don't get creative...get simple! It's easier!
Order and standardization allows for interchangeability... Simmer down Henry Ford
One paving stone short of a sidewalk
I’m really digging how this dude writes and presents ideas and examples.
This section “The Geometry of Assembly” he’s talking about different styles of building a wall or laying pavement, comparing a cyclopean wall, crazy paving, and your typical boring sidewalk using standardized flagstones.
The cyclopean walls, used by the Mycenaeans, consist of irregular shaped limestone boulders, roughly worked, and put together with no mortar.
Crazy paving also consists of irregular shaped slabs worked to fit together as the craftsman is laying the stone.
Then you have your standardized bricks or stones or whatever the hell people use.
When a homeowner rolls up to the Home Depot in their Subaru to buy paving stones, they buy the pre-shaped standarized stones, ready to be put in the intricate design they probably found on Pinterest.
Do we partake in the lovely ordering of standardized identical shapes because it is more appealling?
Or because we’re just lazy assholes?
I need more drink.
Cyclopean wall
Ummmmm
(explaining why humans use geometric figures in their decorations) “The conclusion to which we are driven suggests that it is precisely because these forms are rare in nature that the human mind has chosen manifestations of regularity which are recognizably a product of a controlling mind and thus stand out against the random medley of nature.”
Ok I agree, the world is a hot mess, so we create a sense of order through the use of patterns and easy shapes.
But I don’t really agree...especially since the author contradicts himself on the same page, listing a shit ton of beautifully geometric shapes found in nature. Ok not a shit ton, just 5
Natural geometric shapes are everywhere, they are the literally the building blocks of our world. Humans have copied them, but in such a simplistic shape.
It’s like a child (or me) drawing a picture of my dog. He’s going to have a sausage roll shaped body, a circular head, a cylinder snoot, and triangle ears. Oh he needs legs, rectangles for legs.
We don’t create order because it is lacking in our organic world. We are inspired by, copying, mimicking nature.
I should be a freaking genius
"In order to learn, we must make mistakes..."
Probably not a good sign
I know it's bad when my notes say "let's turn to Wikipedia!!!!!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼"
Sucks to suck
Basically a theory can have multiple supporting factors, proving its potential to be true. But it only takes one single instance to disprove that entire theory. It's like me and beer. I can drink and drink, and all it takes is just that one beer to push me over the edge, turning me into a huge slop tart.
