Broadchurch s3 musings
It’s fair to say that in most dramas the most appropriate actors are cast for the specific parts. If roles require particular skills, or a particular look, then actors who have already demonstrated those skills or looks, or at least the ability to acquire or transform themselves, are more likely to be offered the part or possibly offered an audition for it.
We’ve known since series one that Andrew was cast as Mark Latimer after producing a mind-blowing audition for the role.
We also know that Chris Chibnall wrote some Broadchurch parts with particular actors (eg. Olivia Colman, Arthur Darvill) in mind.
When writing series three, Chibnall was in a different position. He now knew all four leading actors personally as well as professionally.
As series three progressed, it was apparent (to me) just how far aspects of Mark Latimer’s life coincide with Andrew Buchan’s life, interests and abilities! It felt as though some scenes had been written with Andrew in mind.
So, notwithstanding Andrew’s undoubted acting skills with regard to accent, physicality and portrayal of the gamut from subtlety to powerful emotion, this series we also saw Mark:
playing football (skilfully!)
running
Andrew had significant running sequences in The Fixer, Garrow’s Law, The Nativity and The Great Fire. He’s also been known to run the occasional 10km himself.
going to the City of Liverpool
Andrew’s “a supporter of Liverpool (FC) since I was a boy”
swimming
Andrew describes himself as ‘a lean individual who quite likes a swim’, he swims to keep fit, has been spotted at swimming pools and was also filmed swimming in a significant scene in The Sinking of the Laconia.
declaring this house and all the memories - it’s what I struggle with!
Andrew talked of how it feels to return to the Latimer house in series2 DVD and interviews!
And then there was that ending!
What is THAT all about?
