"My roommate," she says before she can lie, and it's all she can do not to wince. "I mean, Cooper's roommate. I mean..."
Priscilla's eyebrow raises, and Reagan sighs.
"Dawson lives with us. On our couch," she admits. "Don't tell my mother, she'll think I'm sleeping with both of them. Or, since she's had about twelve mimosas tonight, she'll ask me why I'm not."
It's a relief when Priscilla chuckles. "Your secret's safe. Well, regardless, aren't you going to introduce me?"
When Reagan looks back towards Cooper and Dawson, Cooper has disappeared - probably to refill his Scotch, she thinks the liquor is one of the only reasons he puts up with her father and her father's friends - and Dawson is by himself.
(How Cooper could have thought that was an okay idea is beyond her.)
Before he can get up to something, Reagan raises her hand and gestures to him, and, luckily enough, catches his attention. He strides toward them, passing through the gathered guests with a fluid grace and the occasional smooth smile, until he's standing at her side. "Great party, Reags. Tell your mom I said so, I can't find her," he says, throwing an arm around her shoulders. "Hi," he adds with a grin in Priscilla's direction, and Reagan can all but see the older woman's blood pressure rising.
Dawson kind of has that effect on people.
"Dawson, this is Priscilla Everton, my mother's best friend. Priscilla, Dawson Somers," she says, and Dawson holds out his free hand.
"Really good to meet you, ma'am," he says, closing his hand around hers. "Reagan and Cooper have told me so many great things about all of you up here that I just had to come along and meet you all for myself."
Priscilla finally gains the ability to talk again, and smiles. "The pleasure is ours, Mr. Somers. And don't worry, Reagan has told me about your...living situation, and I assure you, your secret is safe with me."
A grin spreads across Dawson's face, and Reagan knows immediately that this was a mistake. He looks down at her and squeezes her shoulders, and she wants to hike up her dress, kick off her heels, and make a run for it. But she can't do that without causing a scene, and so she just arches a warning eyebrow at him.
Not that that's ever worked before.
"Does Coop know you told, Miss Reags?" he asks with a laugh in his voice, and Priscilla tilts her head. "I thought we decided we were sticking to the roommates story. You know he isn't ready."
"Dawson, shut up," she hisses, and he laughs, pressing a kiss to the top of her head.
"Mrs. Everton, you're a forward-thinking, open-minded woman, aren't you?" he asks, and Priscilla looks at the furiously-blushing Reagan.
"Reagan Patricia," she begins, and Reagan shoves an elbow into Dawson's side.
"You're such a little shit," she groans, and looks back at Priscilla. "His implications? Ignore them. He's like Tinkerbell, except he survives on causing trouble and not on applause."
"You know, that's a pretty good description. Does that make you Wendy, and Cooper Peter? Because he and I were pretty happy before you came along, you know," he says with an overexaggerated huff, and an imperious mock-glare down at her.
"Dawson, I swear to Christ," Reagan starts, and Priscilla just shakes her head.
"Somers, get your arm off my girlfriend." Cooper's laughing voice interrupts, and Reagan lets out something curiously close to a strangled wail.
"Reagan?" he asks, brow furrowing.
Priscilla just looks confused, and Reagan still wants to run away, but when Cooper playfully shoves Dawson's arm away and wraps his own around Reagan's waist, she's stuck.
"Hi, Priscilla," Cooper says, smiling at the older woman. "You look really nice tonight. I hope Dawson hasn't been laying it on too thick."
Dawson lets out an offended snort as he purposefully slides his arm back around Reagan's shoulders, and lets his hand rest on Cooper's. "You both know I'm a perfect gentleman," he says, and Reagan looks at Priscilla, who's looking at her with wide eyes.
"I've taken up more than enough of your time," Priscilla says, before offering a weak smile to the trio. "Lovely to meet you, Dawson, and to see you again, Cooper, and...Reagan, just don't let Monsignor Rivera see you all like this."
With that, the older woman nearly scampers away, and Dawson bursts into laughter. "Reags, don't worry. She's secretly proud of you. I can tell."
"Proud of her for...Jesus Christ, Dawson."
"I hate you both right now," Reagan grumbles, and disengages herself from their arms.
"What did I do, Reagan?" Cooper whines, and Reagan just holds up her hand.
"You left him by himself, so I thought I'd keep him from causing trouble. And he told Priscilla there are three people involved in this relationship."
"You're the one who told her I was your roommate," Dawson replies with a pout. "Her mind already went there, trust me."
"I'm going to go find the bottle of tequila I stashed earlier. You two get to do damage control while I sit in my old bedroom and get drunk."
"Babe," Cooper starts, but she walks away. He turns to Dawson. "How red did Priscilla get?"
"Really red, bro," Dawson replies with a grin.
"I should probably not ask to dance with her."
"You can't dance with me, either."
"Dawson, this is New Hampshire."
"Everyone in this room right now is a Republican."
"I'm going to go apologize to Priscilla and tell her you're drunk."
"So I shouldn't whistle when you walk away then?"
Cooper just looks at him, smirks, takes a sip from his glass, and shakes his head.
