i'm sure it's easier to compartmentalize when you hide behind an anonymous gossip blog, and as a result, escape most major consequences of your behavior. you are sitting behind a curtain, picking and choosing if and when to post submissions, manipulating the discourse and the perceptions of those reading your blog. you allow names to be dropped, stripping others of the same anonymity you seem to believe that you're uniquely entitled to. you certainly affect lives in a significant way. you destroy another human's ability to participate in a hobby and community they love, then blame them for feeling a certain type of way about that offline. (just say skill issue and move on, am i correct?) even blame them for feeling upset, hurt, paranoid, afraid, etc. in the first place. caring is not a weakness, y'know. (who recently called empathy the fundamental weakness of western civilization? oh, yes! elon musk!) if i'm somehow off base with my assessment, feel free to let me know. it's just difficult to get a full handle on considering your "i don't owe anyone anything" mentality. and by the way, that's maybe not a great mindset for someone wielding power over a community of people. (please don't start with the "people choose to read" excuse. all you're doing is avoiding accountability by shifting the blame to everyone else, which seems to be your forte.) now, like i've said, i believe people can change their path no matter how far along they are, and i hope that happens for you. i hope that you attempt to heal whatever wound is driving this behavior. i hope you use the power you hold for good and take a step toward healing this community. i would be grateful if you did, and i'm sure that i'm not alone.

i cannot comment on this, because i don't know exactly what you're referring to. if you can expand on the specific behavior(s), i'll do my best to respond. i'm also trying to avoid inflammatory language (try is the operative word), because i do want to reach people the best i can. not saying this as a dig bc i fully understand the frustration, but i wanted to make my intentions clear.

i loooove when sites have movie nights bc they're such a low-stakes way for members to bond //// in my experience, the sites that do this tend to have a major exclusive clique problem. not everyone is going to be in the same timezone or have the same availability as the group within the group that runs these movie nights. and not everyone is going to want to/feel comfortable enough to jump on vc with folks on the internet for 2+ hours.

sure, it's a great way for members to bond, but it's always going to be selective and the people that join are, intentionally or unintentionally, going to be favored for rp threads and plots over the rest of the group that doesn't participate. this movie night group is also going to be the loudest voice in the gc and have inside jokes they share that not everyone is going to be involved in. and then when a new voice joins the movie night they're likely going to feel left out from the main group. it's the "everyone is welcome to join in!!!" thing where the dominating clique says that, and when a newcomer tries to be included, they're drowned out in favor of the clique. it's discouraging and frustrating.

there's nothing wrong with making friends through rp, but idt hosting movie nights for the whole site is the way to do it in a site-specific group chat. there are other methods for the whole group to bond together, like hosting an rp event every character can participate in and discussing all the silly threads and whatnot. that is a method of bonding i think all rpers can get behind, regardless of their comfort level for socializing through this hobby.

okay, op here yet again. i wasn't going to say anything, but the level of pushback this benign comment has gotten kind of freaks me out.

not being able to or not wanting to participate in a certain type of event is perfectly normal. having inside jokes is perfectly normal. you are never, ever going to feel included 100% of the time, and this fixation on trying to somehow change that is unhealthy and going to make you miserable.

like, this response is full of assumptions. every movie night i've had took place over a text channel or whatever site we're using to broadcast the stream. vc would just be talking over a movie imo. in my experience, they're usually organized after at least a few months, and everyone's always tried to be accommodating re: timezones. i've never personally wanted to plot more or less following someone's involvement or lack thereof, so that is certainly not a universal rule. i'm also unsure who would be making so many inside jokes, participating in movie discussion would somehow become inaccessible. and also, if you don't understand something, ask. just ask! i don't think i've ever seen a movie night hosted on a site where there are no site events. it's simply one type of opportunity to bond, and if it genuinely becomes that detrimental to morale, either the site is fucked to shit or someone is in their feelings. it's okay to offer multiple avenues for bonding, and not everyone will be able to participate in all of them. even site events! there have been site events i do not have time or energy for/am not interested in, but i am happy for the people who get to enjoy participating!

and lastly, people being close does not equal a clique. it does not have to be a threat to you. inside jokes and the like naturally form in a community, and trying to police all that is not reasonable or appropriate.

i say this with genuine concern and care: you gotta look at you. why do you feel this way? why is this your first instinct? what wound is this triggering? because with the amount of projection i'm seeing, this is not about site movie night.

you're allowed to tell someone who just lost a loved one to "get over it." you're allowed to exclude one person just to be cruel. you're allowed to vote for trump. you're allowed to walk past someone who is crying. you're allowed to say something cruel and unreasonable just to make someone cry. you're allowed to break up with a good partner over text. you're allowed to ghost friends instead of learning how to engage in healthy conflict. you're allowed to hate any group of people based on race, sexuality, etc. you're allowed to laugh at someone for having a learning disability. you're allowed to tell someone the wrong information when asked for directions. you're allowed to make life worse for everyone around you.

That post I made about doctors complaining about ‘abusive’ patients devolved into a discussion about doctors being assaulted by patients on the job (not what the post was about) and the thing is, when they talk about it they speak as though this patient is a normal person in all other scenarios and just hit doctors to hit doctors. Patients with cognitive, neurological or mental health issues are often violent! People are pummeled by their sundowning grandma in their own home every fucking day! It isn’t you, at your job, it is everyone in this person’s life. They’re bringing the person in to get help and try to keep them safe, you, as the medical professional, are the one responsible for figuring out solutions, you are the one who has to go to your management and ask for more stringent protocols to keep you and your patients safe, the patient probably cannot advocate for themself!

And as for the minority of patients who are not experiencing a medical crisis that affects their behavior and just want to throw hands because they are fundamentally violent people, they’re also brawling with food service workers.

Medical professionals assault and kill patients frequently, the difference is that they are the ones in a position of power with (hopefully) a clear reasoning capability. There should be barriers in place to protect these medical professionals and to protect patients but the way that people in these professions behave like they are the only ones on earth to experience violence in the world place and they are complete hapless martyrs who had no idea sick people could behave in ways that endanger themselves and others is maddening. If you are not protected enough, it is because the same medical system that is hurting us refuses to protect you, not that all patients are conspiring to ruin your day and be mean to you.
