Shostakovich: Symphony No. 5

This first movement often gets in my face, as a daytime ear-worm or morning dream track: its blatant appeal to the emotions is so insistent.

This time I woke to the brass sections’ fervent outcries from 0:18 to 0:58. Make it stop - I can’t be doing with this anguish so early..!

The last minute of the first movement fades away from 14:49: I’d forgotten the lonely violin solo, but recall the main theme’s farewell in the lower strings, then the clank of timpani, harp and trumpets beneath the haunted celesta.

Dmitri spoofs a waltz in the second movement: heavy-booted basses, squeaky clarinet and debonair lead violinist.
